John Adams #1

Let's say that George Washington decides not to become President and stays at his home in Mount Vernon. For yes he went to the Philidelphia convention he did not engage in any of the debates. So would this mean Adams becomes the first President?

Would it be someone else?

What would the Presidency be like?

If the election of 1788 happened exactly as per OTL, then yes. However, VA would probably try to find an alternative, considering their electoral preponderance.

Also, the office of the Presidency was crafted knowing Washington would hold it. Odds are slim he opts out at the last minute. I was considering writing a TL where he died and thus folks were forced to deal without him.

The other big possibility is Jefferson. Or Franklin, but he did actually die very quickly.
