Joe Smith who?

Winter 1812-1813: While undergoing an operation to remove part of an infected shin bone, Joseph Smith Jr. seems to be on the road to improvement. However, soon after the operation, Smith comes down with a high fever and eventually dies.

How does this effect history? Do we see any religion along the lines of Mormonism? What about westward expansion into OTL Utah? Other side effects that I can't think of?

Almost certainly no Mormonism. Brigham Young might very well have gone into politics if he hadn't become an Owenite or a Shaker. Utah is settled and run by a consortium of cattle barons and railroads, becoming known as a state of corporate interests into the present day.
