1932 - Jimmy Doolittle dies in a plane crash.

1935 - Plans to test 100 octane gasoline never take place because of the inability to find a pilot dedicated enough to the program.

1938 - Plans to expand the Japanese Carrier fleet and build the Zero Fighter curtailed because of lack of performance of Carrier Aircraft versus land based bombers. U.S. and U.K. curtail building of long range bombers for the same reason.

Chamberlain receives intelligence reports indicating that German Air Force is short ranged and unable to strike at England. Hitler's demand for Czechoslovakia repulsed, and coalition of England, France, and Russian threaten military action. General Beck of German Army General staff engineers coup and Hitler is overthrown.

1940 - Prime Minister Chamberlain retires. Lord Halifax becomes Prime Minister. Franklin Roosevelt retires. Wendall Wilkie elected President.

1941 - Japan declares war on Netherlands in order to seize Dutch East Indies. Halifax Government does not intervene. President Wilkie makes strong diplomatic protest, and threatens to cut off oil and scrap metal.

1942 - Japan invades Philippines. U.S. Asiatic Fleet build around Heavy Cruiser U.S.S. Houston destroyed. U.S. declares war on Japan. U.S. Pacific Fleet Battleships engage Japanese Fleet off of Guam. U.S. loses Arizona and Oklahoma in exchange for the Japanese Battleships Hiei and Kirishima. Carriers battle exchanges Lexington and Yorktown for Akagi and Kaga.

First of all, why all this result from one man's death? Most certainly someone somewhere will try it. Too much benefits can be gained by it for the concept of 100 octane fuel to be ignored.

Two, US imposes an embargo to importing oil to the country that just graduated to self sufficiency. How does that work?

EDIT: Scratch this part. I haven't see the part where Hitler falls.

I agree here. Dolittle had superior ability at solving engineering problems, but he was just one among many. As he points out in his autobiography the question or need for high octance fuels was seen and addressed by others at the same time he was involved with the problem There seem to be some weaknesses here in other technical matters too.

Otoh, of all themajor powers, the us was the only one to invest in high octane gas, iirc, so i dont think its as predestined as all that

Improbable, considering the amount of air racing going on. Not to mention there are ways besides the creation of lead additives to increase octane. Plus the research by hot rodders & racers to do it for automotive gasoline, which will be applicable to aviation.

Extremely unlikely. Given supercharging is impractical (& I'm not so sure improved combustion chambers, from hemi to wedge to swirl, couldn't be conceived), increasing displacement is brainlessly easy. So you see *V2250 *Merlins in *Hurricanes & R3350s or R4360s in *F4Us & B-19s & 2500ci radials in *A6Ms. It's not like aviation development just stops.

Nonsense. IJN had CV-borne TBs, & A5Ms which were superior to the F3Fs you'd saddle the USN with (why should USN get F2As?), so King (butterflies have him get the job over Kimmel) would have his ass handed to him.
