JFK Lives - 1963

This would be taking place in 1964 under the idea that President John Kennedy had survived, and gone on to pass the Civil Rights Bill, along with keeping the escalating Vietnam crisis from blowing-up.

This would be JFK's reelection campaign. And could very well continue through history as long as we want it to. Any thoughts or takers?

We've had many JFK threads (most recently here), and there are other TLs on JFK living. But by all means, if you can provide an original spin, please do so. ;) As you can see by my sig, I can help you if you so desire.

Domestic
- New Frontier legislative package passes Congress following the tricameral Democratic landslide of 1964, only slightly smaller than LBJ's IOTL.

- No Great Society.
- More of an emphasis on middle class than poor compared to LBJ.
- Some GS measures passed, mostly to do with consumer and environmental protection, not New Deal 2.0 as LBJ envisioned.
- Either Medicare or Medicaid will pass. Neither Kennedy brother has the legislative acumen to get both. Medicaid is easier, because the GOP is not going to vote against basic healthcare for the poor. You don't need Rove to make the appropriate attack ad on that one.
- Cabinet shuffle: McNamara to State, Rusk to the UN, RFK to Defense, and Katzenbach to Justice.

Foreign
- Continuation of OTL Vietnam policy, aka Vietnamization under a different name.
- No PRC outreach- way too early.
- A form of SALT I with the Soviet Union.
- Continued detente with the Soviets.
- Potential outreach to Cuba- though the brothers did diverge on this issue. For once, this seems like a genuine difference of opinion, not their usual good cop/bad cop routine.

Electoral
- JFK landslide '64, slightly smaller than LBJ's both for the WH and Congressional. Goldwater is still the nominee, both Jack and Barry do a joint travelling town-hall debate series.*
- RFK v. Nixon '68 or HHH v. Nixon '68. I say Nixon because Reagan might not even be elected Governor, Rocky is too liberal for the base, and Romney is not presidential material.
-Nixon likely beats Humphrey, but any RFK v. Nixon matchup is 50-50.
- If Nixon wins in '68, RFK runs for Senate in '68 against Jack Javits, likely succeeds Nixon as a two-termer in '76.

*Term wasn't invented in '63, but that's what the proposal was.

I would assume that Barry Goldwater still wins the Republican nomination. That means JFK runs a campaign like Johnson's OTL campaign. He also meets with the same success. This is the 3rd JFK lives timeline in a week.

Hey! It gives us Kexperts plenty of work to do. ;) Regarding Barry: his supporters had already hijacked the GOP by that point. Rocky had already divorced and remarried in June '63, which destroyed his chances, Romney declined to run, and Scranton was a last-minute kamikaze attempt to block Goldwater at the Cow Palace.

JFK Lives

In 1964, JFK is re-elected as President of the United States. On the one hand, he accomplishes the task of narrow passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the eventual passage of the 1966 Voting Rights Act, after much delay and compromise. But the White House soon finds itself under fire when in 1964, the PRC detonates its first A-Bomb. These criticisms become even greater when the Kennedy, against the advice of his military advisors and his Secretary of State Robert MacNamara, orders the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam, during the lame duck year of 1967.

By 1968, the situation becomes even more grim for the Democrats. With the Soviets moving troops into Czechoslavakia, Viet Cong troops overrunning the capital of Saigon and the Chinese explosion of an H-Bomb, many Republicans and even some moderate Democrats are beginning to question whether the Kennedy administration's foreign policy should be considered a failure.
Based on these concerns, and the disillusionment many white Southerners due to the Civil Rights legislation of the administration, Richard Nixon of California is elected President and Spiro Angnew is elected Vice-President in 1968. Upon his inauguration, Nixon seeks to assure the nation stating, "It is morning in America!". The national sense of pride is further boosted that summer with the launch of Apollo 11. Yet the situation returns to situation of grim struggle when in 1970, backed by Chinese forces, Communist forces begin attacks against the Thai military government. Based on these attacks, Nixon orders 50,000 troops into Thailand in order to back the military government in the region. The situation in Asia begins to escalate even further when Reagan blocks the PRC's entrance into the United Nations.Winning by a further landslide in 1972, Richard Nixon is swept back into the White House.

By the 1976, Ford is running for the Presidency. As such it is not entirely unexpected that in the need for a clear victory against in the Thai Communist forces, Nixon orders the bombing of Cambodia. Although Democrats are apt to protest the action, yet they are hampered by the 1974 revelations of extramarrital affairs of John F. Kennedy during his administration. Yet the darkest element of the situation is the further chilling of relations with China as Mao dies.

By 1977, Gerald Ford is the President of Unites States

By 1978 the Fords adminstration has been in office for over a year, when a military coup d'etat takes over the nation of Thailand, ending the U.S. backed democratic coalition.

By 1979, the Fords administration is faced with even greater foreign policy crises. In Iran the U.S. embassy is taken over by followers of the Ayatollah Khomeini, angered by the Nixon/Agnew administration's support of the Shah of Iran and Begining to Rescue American Hostages. The region is further inflamed by the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. In China, the situation nearly explodes as Chinese forces lay claim to Taiwan, causing the Taiwan Straits Crisis.

Basically LBJ-lite (read: more moderate, less successful). There's a Vietnam debate here, RB and Norton think Vietnamization is going to happen. Everyone else? OTL is your guide: the fact that LBJ listened to Kennedy's Cabinet on Vietnam is a pretty strong indicator there.

By Nov 19 2005 George W Bush Annouces to Annex Cuba

im only quoting this one because well...the rest...completle batshit asb...especialyl the post 80s parts...

but anyways...the us wouldnt be allowed to annex cuba, not without withdrawing from the un first, because i can see alot of international backlash and attacks against the us if they tried to expand themselves futher through military action

If JFK lived past 63 and won re-election, it is doubtful RFK would run in 68. That would happen in 72 or 76 or later. Why? Potential voter fatigue with JFK by 68. Most re-elected presidents have trouble in their second terms, so RFK as a candidate may not be appealing in 68. Just look at the election today. Many say Jeb Bush would have been a viable candidate if he was not related to GWB and many refused to vote for Hillary Clinton in 08 for similar reasons. Another thing to consider if Chappaquidik would still happen and what impact that would have on a RFK candidacy.

LBJ listened to the part of the cabinet which supported increasing involvement in Vietnam. And he was weary of all the talk of withdrawal himself. Johnson's problem was that he was not good in foreign policy. JFK was. And Johnson was too ignorant to fully recognize things he should have, even for what was known at that time which was an only a partial picture and a partial understanding.

See heya for part of the story (5:21).
