JFK Jr. decides not to fly to wedding in 1999.

Suppose JFK Jr. had decided against flying his aircraft to Hyannis to attend his cousin's wedding in July 1999.

Would he have run for the Senate? He no doubt would be opposed to the Iraq war.

Then again since he lived in NYC he could been killed on 9/11/01.

I thought that the Kennedys were now broadly apolitical, baring the obvious few exceptions?

Did JFK jnr have any plans to run for office before he died?

Then again since he lived in NYC he could been killed on 9/11/01.

A few million people live in NYC. 8,274,527 in the city alone to be precise (modern day). 2751 died on 9/11. So, assuming that everybody who died in the towers lived within the city itself, Kennedy has a 0.033% chance of dying. That ignores the fact that many new yorkers wouldnt go near the towers on any given day.

My dad believes that if he lived and had a political office, he'd run for President in '08.

That may be very possible, but I was watching some special on JFK Jr. a while back, that John-John's friends that he felt as if he had all the time to world to get into politics, so I believe he would proabably keep the magazine George,up and running and possibly in 2006 for the New York Governership...

I doubt he would have tried to run against Hillary for senate in 2000 and 2006 or against Senior Senator Chuck Schumer. I think his best bet would be for the Governership in 06 but Im not a New Yorker lol

Had JFK Jr. lived I think it would be rather that he would he run for senate in 2000 because his wife Carolyn strongly objected it and most of his energy would have been focused on keeping his magazine George afloat and saving his rocky marriage. Just before his death he was looking to going into a joint business venture with a good friend of his from Yale named Dan Samson. It would involve content wriiting for the internet. It probably would not have gotten off the ground when the dot.com bubble burst in March 2000, so he and Dan would be able to readjust their plans and adapt to the changing situation. This joint business venture, if it does happen, will probably be launched in fall of 2000. Around that same time George folds and has its farewell issue in September or October of that year. He would have been strongly urged and, no doubt, seriously consider running for Mayor of NYC in 2001. Hopefully he would have been strong and wise enough to resist that temptation. Within hours after the 9-11 WTC attacks he would have realised his candidacy would be toast and he would not stand a chance against Mike Bloomberg. In sure he woukl have gone down to the ruins of WTC to volunteer to help out and do what ever he can to raise money. His next and best opportunity for political office woukd came in his own neighborhood in Manhattan, the 26th district for NY state Senate. In February 2002 there was a special election held in the district and Liz Kruger was elected state senator. If JFK Jr. ran for that seat he would have easily won; as it was he looking into the possibility of runnning for governor in 2002. But haveing just got elected state senator he woukl have passed on running for governor in November 02. Working as a legisltor up in Albany would have gined him the necessary and valuable hands-on experience for a run for governor. More importantly, he would gotten to known and worked directly with the Speaker of the House Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno. So in 2006 when Governor George Pataki decides not to run for reelection the governorship is his for the taking. Attorney General Elliot Spitzer decides not to challenge him for the nomination and instead runs again for attorney general. Tom Suozzi runs aginst him in the priamry and JFK Jr beats him in a overwhelming landslide. In the November elections he wins overwhelmingly against John Faso. So when he is innaugarated in January he doesn't come in as a "F***ing steamroller" but comes in as much less arrogant than Elliot Spitzer but as more flexible with his fellow legislators having worked with them for over 4.5 years. He declines the services of the Emperor's Club and never became a client of Ashley Dupree, therefore he doesn't resign as governor in March 2008. However Attorney General Elliot Spitzer did and on March 14th Governor Kennedy tells him to hand in his letter of resignation. He is then replaced by Andrew Cuomo. In late January 2008 he, along with his sister Carolyn and uncle Ted, makes a bold move to endorce Seantor Barack Obama for the nomination (shortly after becoming governor of NY in Jan. 2007 he ruled out a run for the 08 presidential elections). He knew Obama would win the NY Primary (in ATL Hillary beats Obama by 54% to Obama's 45%). Governor Kennedy is said to be on the top of presumptive Democratic nominee Barck Obama's short list for VP. So far JFK Jr. has remianed somewhat coy and evasive as whether he would accept the VP slot.

Both the Democratic Presidential & Vice Presidential nominees would be under 50 years old; probably not a politically wise move.

Wouldn't be the first time that has happened, remember Clinton/Gore 1992? Clinton was 46 and Gore was 44. Also there was U.S. Grant and Schuyler Colfax 1868; ages 46 and 45 respectively.

Oh, come on. JFK jr living or dying would have had NO effect on Osama Ben Laden and company. Or 9/11 happening.

Suppose JFK Jr. had decided against flying his aircraft to Hyannis to attend his cousin's wedding in July 1999.

He would have found some other way to smash his aircraft into the ground. He was an inexperienced pilot with an advanced aircraft and not much patience. The fact that he didn't crash sooner is the surprising part...

JFK Jr's marriage with Carolyn was at a crossroads in July 1999 and it could have gone eithter way. My hunch is that he and Carolyn decide to have a trial separation in autumm of 1999 and after a few months they get back together in one last-ditch attempt to save their marriage. In the meantime Conde-Nast bought George in September 99(JFK Jr was in talks with them just before the plane crash) in the hopes that this will revive circulation and morale. It did give a temporary boost to the magazine but within 6 months circulation was declining and morale started to go down among the magazine staff. Rumors started to swirl that JFK Jr. was looking to start a new business venture and that George was going to fold. So it is at the backdrop of these rumors that he called for a staff meeting on the morning of July 17,2000 to break the bad news to them. He confirmed he was indeed starting a joint business venture with an old friend from college. And that the September issue of George will be their last issue. By this time he and Carolyn officially filed for separation, and would file for divorce in June 2001. On September 11, 2000 the final issue of George hit the newstands. A week earlier on September 4th, JFK Jr and his longtime friend from Yale Dan Samson officially launches the joint business venture of J.D Portalsmith.Com. - I'm sure the two would have thought of a bettter title but that's all I can come up with- So with his marriage falling apart, George Magazine folding, and starting up a new business; it is quite understandable and not all that surprising why JFK Jr. would decline to run for Senator of New York in 2000. To be contined

Continued.
His new business venture of JD PortalSmith.Com involvesd content writting and design and resources for blogs and websites. Its main headquarters functions as a internet cyber cafe. He wrote a regular essay or column on its website dealing mainly with issues of politics and culture, just like in George. His partner Dan Samson handled much of the day-to-day affairs of the company, or as John put it, "Minding the store." Even more so after after he's elected state senator in 2002. By 2005 JFK Jr sold his share of the business to Dan, so he could devote full time to his political career. After his divorce was fianalized he once again became one of the world's most eligible bachelors. He was briefly involved with Mariah Carey, and for a with while, with Mira Sorvino. All this gave ample fodder for the paparazis. At the end of the day he decided to go the route of his friend George Clooney and stay a single bachelor. After he turned 40 he started to look and dress a bit more conservatively; gone were the days when he appeared roller-blading shirtless and when he was playing frisbee or football in the park he always had at least a t-shirt on. In fact the only time he ever appeared topless was when he at a swimming pool or at a beach.
As I said previously he ran governor in 2006, well Attorney General Eliot Spitzer had seriously considered running for goverrnor that year but by the summer of 2005 it became apparent that JFK Jr was the clear front-runner and was out polling him, he dropped out of the race and decided to run for reelection as Attorney General in which he handidly beat Jeanine Piro in the 2006 elections. Many pundits have speculated that Spitzer would be next Attorney General of the U.S. if the Democrats win the 2008 elections and Spitzer himself was also eying on the job of Manhattan D.A, in the likely event that Bob Morganthal retired at the end of 2010. But all that speculation came to naught when he had to resign as Attorney General in March 2008. After being overwhelmingly elected governor in November 2006 JFK Jr chose David Patterson as Lieutenant Governor and Andrew Cuomo as Secretary of State. He is consistantly a popular governor and has enjoyed high approval ratings though his approval raing as of late has gone down to 52% due to some of his legislative agenda not being fullfilled. Relations between him and Senator Clinton have been diplomatic, cool and reserved but rarely cordial. So it's not surprising that he was not an euthusiastic supporter of her bid for the presidency in 2008, and it's not too surpising that he would endorse Barack Obama in late January of this year along with his sister Caroline and uncle Ted. Senator Clinto still won the NY primary and barely squeaked a victory in Massachussetts on Super Tuesday. His endorsement of Obama would have been a minor footnote were it not for the fact that Bill Clinton made a phone call to Governor Kennedy on Feburary 6th in which he exploded and verbally went off on the governor with explicitives, profanities and diatribes. What was very revealing about this phone conversation is the stark contrast between the two: How calm, cool, and composed JFK Jr was and never once taking Clinton's bait, and how out of control, petulant, and total lack of professionalism and class a former president had displayed throughout all this. Even then the details of this conversation would remain relatively unknown were it not for the fact that unbeknownst to the two that this conversation was being secretly taped was released to the public three week later on Febuary 27. It may have been taped by a zealous staffer of Governor Kennedy or someone from the staff of Senate Majority leader Joe Bruno. To this date no really knows who wiretapped the phones and the investigation is still officially "ongoing." Any rate the damage was done, Obama beat Clinton in a narrow victory in the victory of 51% to 48% in the Texas primary, Clinton beat Obama in the Ohio primary by 52.5% to Obama's 47% and Obama lost by 10 points in Rhode Island but won by 20 points in Vermont on March 4th. More importantly, Bill Clinton committed the "unpardonable sin" of the Democratic Party; verbally savaging the son and heir to Camelot. As a result of this, Bill Clinton did make any contact with Bill Richardson when he endorsed Obama later in March. Governor Kennedy is considered to be on the short list of Barack Obama's choice for VP. As such he adds the presige of the name and family and helps capitalizes on Obama's strength but really add anything to the ticket for both New York and Massachussetts are already in the bag for Obama in November and he has little over 6 years of elected office experience and no foreign policy and security credentials to boot. At any rate he will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming Demcoratic convention in Denver and many pundits and analysists say that he will most likely be the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination in 2012 should Obama fail to win in November. Perhaps there will be a sequel to Camelot after all.
He he not acted on his instincts and decided to fly on that fateful night of July 16, 1999 with his wife and sister-in-law good chances are they would have most likely crashed and gotten killed due to the weather conditions that night, his inexperience in night flying and his injured ankle. Thus he would have been another casulty of lost youthful innocence and unrealized potential.
