The XF-11 and XF-12 reconnaissance airplanes were ordered in 1943, but neither flew until well after the end of WWII, by which point they were both unneeded and obsolescent due to the advent of the turbojet. The XF-12’s cancellation hit Republic Aviation particularly hard, taking the civilian airliner derivative (the RC-2) down with it.
Could either aircraft program have survived if they had been specified with turbojets from the start, making them a more valuable long-term investment for the USAAF (and then USAF) after WWII? For the XF-12 in particular, if it had successfully flown by about 1947 with jets, could a jet-propelled RC-2 have seen commercial service?
