I found this interesting article on wiki about a german designed jet powered VTOL transport, and it got me to thinking. While the West German government found it's projected costs to be too high, I seriously doubt that it was more expensive than the V-22 wound up being. If you combine this with the apparent increased practicality of VTOL jet aircraft over tiltrotor, it stands to reason that the pentagon would have been wiser to go with a jet powered design over what wound up being the V-22, they quite possibly would have spent less money and would probably have had a working production model years ahead of time.
So what do you folks think is the plausibility of the pentagon adopting a jet powered design? Also would it have been a success?
