Jerry Brown in 1984?

OTL Jerry Brown made three failed attempts to gain the Democratic nomination for president, in 1976, 1980 and 1992. As I understand it, he did not run in 1984 because his political career seemed washed up after he failed to be elected as one of California's Senators in 1982. However, what if he did win the senatorial election and was therefore in a position to run for president in 1984? Would he have a shot at the Democratic nomination? And if he did gain it, who would be his running mate, and how would he do? I don't think Reagan is realistically beatable in 1984, but I suspect Brown (or, well, anyone) would at least do better than Mondale did in OTL. Thoughts, American politics experts?

Wilson won for 3 reasons: he ran against Rose Bird, Reagan's efforts on his behalf, and a heavy Armenian turnout for George Deukmiejan. So let's say Deukmiejan loses the Republican gubernatorial nomination and Reagan is otehrwise preoccupied. Brown ekes out a victory. If Brown ran for POTUS, he would most likely not get the nomination.

Considering Mondale nearly lost to Hart IOTL, I could see him winning, especially if Hart gets into trouble like he always does a little bit earlier.

Okay, but even if it's not likely, imagine Brown does win the nomination--how does the campaign go and who might be his running mate? (Someone more establishment to balance the ticket, I should think).

Perhaps Askew or Bentsen.

Bentsen would be weird, then you'd have a sitting president who's a former Governor of California versus a challenger who's a former Governor of California, and a sitting VP from Texas versus a challenger from Texas. No home state advantages there!
