Before the decision to make war was made, the Japanese naval and military forces had to ensure that their air power was sufficiently equipped to handle opposition forces and achieve not just air superiority, but air supremacy. Minoru Genda, an air power advocate, reported the British state of affairs, such as it was, and the war was on. What if Britain had suffered a Whale POD, and miraculously became not merely adequate, but actually quite good? It was doctrine to put weeny motors on fighters to achieve ballerina-like handling, but intercepters with bigger engines were also developed. Horikoshi, OTL, never got the engines he wanted from the navy. What if he did? What if fighters were all armored, and had self-sealing tanks? What if Zeke and Jack became one? The Tojo with the Oscar's wing area? A Japanese Thunderbolt is in the works.
