So here's a doozy: Japan in a world in which the Central Powers won the Great War and Britain was Neutral.

Japan, seeing lots of low-hanging fruit, joins the Allies and goes to war against Germany. The Japanese nab Qingdao, German Micronesia, Nauru, German New Guinea, the German Solomon Islands, and West Samoa.

Britain stayed out of the war, so I imagine it didn't go past early 1916. The Germans defeat France quickly and offer generous terms as they want to shift focus east as soon as possible. Russia loses less territory compared to OTL - ceding only Kars, Batumi, Erevan, Poland, West Belarus, Lithuania, and Courland. There is however post-War a 1905-style Revolution in Russia which ends with some kind of left-wing albeit not Bolshevik government in charge of the country. Maybe its Republican or maybe its a Constitutional Monarchy. No idea.

Anyways, Japan has a land border with Australia (New Guinea) and a maritime border with the United States (West Samoa). That should create diplomatic headaches for Britain. Meanwhile Japan likely had a tougher time expanding into German territory here without (1) The German Navy fighting the British and (2) the Japanese having to fight a land campaign against the Germans and spend money occupying territory. Greater costs associated with war may affect Japanese domestic politics.
