Jane Grey the exile.

What would have been the consequences if when the people rallied to support Mary, Jane Grey and her husband had managed to escape abroad, perhaps finding sanctuary in Scandanavia.

Jane and Guildford would have to learn a new language?

There isn't going to be a great uprising for the daughter of a man who gets executed for trying to usurp the throne in his daughter's name. Or for Dudley for shoehorning his son into the picture and getting the same reward as Jane's father.

No there's going to be no rising but Mary will still die without an heir, as most likely will Elizabeth. That gives another option to James VI of Scotland when Elizabeth dies. Jane and Dudley's Children or Grandchildren will have a legitimate claim to the throne. It's even possible that if she lives long enough Jane herself could once again be Queen.

Seriously? The first thing after having herself declared legitimate once more will be Mary having Jane Grey's family tossed out of the line of succession to avoid that very thing.

And Elizabeth may be just as likely to re-admit them. With her choice not to marry doing that provides a counter to James Stuart, and France's very close links to Scotland are something the English will be justifiably wary of.

Elizabeth re-admitting a girl who tried to usurp her throne? Even if Elizabeth believed, as Mary did, that Jane was a pawn, Jane still took the title. I think it's highly unlikely that Elizabeth would change the succession in Jane's favor for that reason alone.

With Jane running about alive in, say, Denmark; Elizabeth may have reason to reconsider NOT marrying.

I doubt Jane running around will be reason enough to persuade Liz to marry. It's not as though any of Mary Stuart's three marriages or Katherine Grey's two or Mary Grey's one persuaded her to do so, OTL. Perhaps she just issues a similar declaration to what she did to Katherine Grey's Seymour kids. Or she issues an Act of Attainder against Jane(although AFAIR, Henry VI issued one against Edward IV during the Readeption, Edward IV issued one against Harry Tudor) so provided there are enough people who don't want England swallowed by Scotland, Jane stands a sporting chance when Elizabeth kicks - be it in 1562 or 1603.

IMHO.....Jane made her bid for the throne, she lost. She was willing to live with her loss (OTL), it was actions by others than made it necessary for Queen Mary I to execute her. So....if Jane makes it to Copenhagen, it's "farvel, England" and she won't ever go back.

BUT: I stand behind my "Jane and Guileford learn a new language" statement!
