James the Seventh of Scotland

Is there any way that James II could have abdicated rule in England in favour of William and Mary, while remaining King of Scotland (and Ireland)?

I think it would be difficult: a Jacobite Scotland would be too much of a threat for a Williamite England to tolerate, so William III wouldn't be likely to just let Scotland go like that. For his part, James would have still seen himself as the rightful King of England, and hence would be unlikely not to try and take back his southern throne; and even if for some reason he didn't want the English crown, he'd have known that William would see him as a threat anyway, so he'd be essentially forced to try and get rid of William for safety's sake if nothing else.
