James Sobieski, Prince of Moldavia

During his war against the Ottomans John Sobieski planned not just to retake Podolia but also to conquer Moldavia and put his son James on the throne. After his death James Sobieski could use Moldavia as power base to ensure his election as king of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. WI this plan had been successful?

I didn't know this, but it's very interesting!

Russia didn't have a strong interest in Moldavia yet -- Peter's expedition was still a generation away. So I guess he could have done it, if he could have whipped the Ottomans there.

But how would holding Moldavia help James win the election?

Financial resources to buy votes, military resources if it comes to war, tempting some nobles with the idea of expanding south. At the very least he'd have something to fall back on. But I don't know what exactly was going through Sobieski's head.
