Just read in THE AUSTRALIAN newspaper a cpl mths ago, an article bout James meredith, and how, despite his involvement in the Ole Miss desegregation and all the surrounding furor back in 1961/62, he never actually became a member of the established civil rights movement, uinstead criticising the approach of MLK et al, remainining a Republican in political allegiance, and even working for the office of Strom Thurmond, while viewing his enrolment at ole Miss as a more or less isolated event in his life. Now WI he actually did become part of the civil rights movement after he'd been shot during the Ole Miss disturbances ? How much more influential could a figure like James Meredith have been as an official bona fide civil rights advocate ?
