James II and vii more like his grandfathers

so inspired by @Mikestone8, I was just curious as to what people thought would be different if James II and vii was more like his two grandfathers and his brother than like his father. By this I mean instead of being his way or the high way, he knew how to play people, how to charm them and how to get what he wanted, without pissing off everyone.

I'm getting the sense that either he'd be able to strike a balance with dissenters and Catholics and the country party, or be able to stomp one of them out. The whigs and tory division also likely wouldn't have come into play as he'd not be a Catholic

Being an English version of Henry IV of France, could be interesting. How would the nation react to him being assassinated?
