James Buchanon

Was he really gay? I've been wanting a gay President for some time now.

We don't know for sure. He was the only president never to have been married. While I did read some evidence that Buchanan may have been "alone" with a male member of his cabinet, there is also evidence of him being with women when he was younger, which makes determining his sexual orientation difficult to figure out.

Anyways, if he is outed, I don't think it will matter that much, because the United States has bigger issues to deal with in the 1850s than a gay president. Probably just a few "this war is punishment for the sodomite" quotes while the civil war is raging.

he could have been bi...

anyway, i think you underestimate the bigotry of the olden days. buchanan would be impeached if not lynched, in my opinion

I want a lesbian Jewish Chinese president. Just for the diversity. We finally have a black president, but he's a lousy one....

I'm bored, so did some RESEARCH. I found an article discussing this topic. http://lindholm.jp/chinf_buc.html

If he was gay, it apparently was an open secret so no lynching. :p William King, the supposed lover, was called "Miss Nancy" by Andrew Jackson (according to wikipedia), so even the badass of the day didn't care.

Yay, research!

I know. I wouldn't vote for somebody just based on that. I would just like it if there was more diverse candidates who share my political views.

I really don't think it would have made much of a difference beyond a few political cartoons and snide remarks.

America was actually less up-tight back in that era. It was before hard line Victorian prudishness really took hold and while gays were called "fancy" or "girlly" their existence was largely accepted, just not talked about. This was the same for prostitution and infidelity. Christian conservatives didn't have the influence in society and government at this time like they gained during the Cold War.
