Jackson wins election in 1824.

Here is my proposal:

William Harris Crawford has that stroke of his in September, and it causes him to kick the bucket.

All of the electoral votes from Virginia and Georgia go to Jackson, along with two of the ones from New York and one of the ones from Delaware. The rest go to Adams.

With these new electoral votes from the dead Crawford, Jackson makes a narrow victory with 52% of the votes. There is no issue over Jackson not having a majority. There is no corrupt bargain. Jackson is simply president, four years before he would be elected in OTL.

So... What happens now?

the Indians are toast. so are Jackson's political enemies.

Jackson felt that he had been cheated in the 1824 election. He spent the next 4 years building up what was essentially a personality cult. If he wins in 1824 I would see him as much less bitter and with less of a personality cult, which could mean a less out of control inaugural bash. Rachel would be alive as a very interesting First Lady and would also tend to soften Jackson's many rough edges---unless of course someone tried again to sully her then Jackson would go ballistic.

One edge that might be rougher is in foreign policy. By 1829 Jackson's hostility towards Britain had mellowed. Four years earlier more traces of the old venom would be there.

There is a good possibility that tariffs are set lower than the Tariff of the Abominations. The whole Nullification Crisis might be avoided but even if it doesn't the timing of it would mean that the split between President Jackson and VP Calhoun does not occur.

Again timing might also let the Second Bank of America survive. It might even make the amount of Indian removal legislation he can ramrod through Congress less.

Jackson serves 3 full terms as President. Van Buren loses to Harrison in 1836 due to the Panic of '36. The 13th Amendment to the US Constitution, which limits the President to 2 terms in office, becomes law in 1839. An effort to repeal the amendment in the late 1930's during F.D.R.'s 2nd presidential term falls 4 states shy of the number needed for ratification however. However, since 1930's proposed amendment has no ratification deadline, it goes into effect in 1998 as the 29th Amendment after receiving the required number of state ratifications. As a result, Bill Clinton runs for and narrowly wins a 3rd term as President with 49% of the popular vote and 294 electoral votes.
