J.J. Abrams and Kripke's "Revolution" (NBC-TV); "Dies the Fire-2012?"

After seeing the trailer on Youtube, you will either love or hate the idea:

Yes, it looks like the idea of S.M. Stirling's "Dies the Fire" minus the annoying aspects of nuclear energy and combustion. All that is known in the trailer is that for 15 years the entire planet has been robbed of electricity...

its stupid.
fullstop.

for starters...the trailer that shows how the world went from a urban jungle to a full blown rainforrest in less than 15 years is ridicolous...unless the event which destroyed all electrical based appliances and functions (itself a stupidity...seeing as electricity still exsists in nature, it should be easily harnessed again...not to mention all the natural electrical systems we use, and i doubt that in 15 years, people the world over haent figured out how to get things going again as its not that hard...unless again, the event made everyone dumb) also made oxygen miracle-gro for plants too

Where are they getting all their new, high-quality clothes from?

Also, considring that the soldiers have apparently marched from Philadelphia to Chicago on horseback, how is it the clothes look like they have just been dry-cleaned? Anyone on a road trip knows how quickly a car and its passengers begin to smell...

They should have gotten people who do gritty period pieces to do the direction, wardrobes and makeup.

Then again, people might gag if they got out of their climate controlled bubble.

Too much on the DDDOOOOMMMM side of things. I doubt very much that countries are going to fall apart without electricity. The world did pretty good on just horse and sail.

Skip down to the railroad map. So far didn't see anything that precluded steam locomotives.
The problem though, is that without electricity, just about every nation is going to be many times over the ecological carrying capacity. With the level of mass starvation that it would cause, no state could survive.

One thing that I never is understand is where are all of the firearms and bicycles. As someone whose uncle runs a bicycle shop, you can repair and maintain bicycles with no electricity. It's just really uncomfortable. As for firearms, wouldn't these be the things that are maintained? I can name several gunshops that have .50 caliber machine guns in liberal San Francisco. AK-47s and AR-15s are proudly able to endure most environmental damage. Police weapons are definitely built to last a long time. All they need is someone to maintain and produce a steady supply of bullets.

Not enough emaciated, starving, dirty people. Totally ruins suspension of disbelief.

Exactly. :D

From the infinite repository of evening clothes aboard the Battlestar Galactica. (I so hate you as characters, Baltar and Six.)

Its sad when Jeremiah (2002) actually was more consistent with the techology: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDvU0PbhsNM

Indeed. :(

Abrams and co. played Modern Warfare far too often. EMP (or whatever) does not work that way ! The crumbling of architecture does not work that way ! You have several ridiculous plot holes ! Gah...

If they still have guns why have they gone back to muskets?

Yep. I severely doubt most gun nuts and gunsmiths would have the knowledge to repair a musket, since the guns they mostly repair or modify are modern semi-automatics and bolt-actions. And that musket looked like it was looted from a museum.

Besides, the whole trailer makes it look like a B movie attempt at a post-apoc exploitation combo of western and swashbuckler fiction. :D What was shown in the trailer reminded me of an unholy union of LOST and The Postman (black guy and co. are sooo totally not holnists in prettier suits ), plus the Emberverse premise. :D

And why do I get the feeling that the gratuituous prevalence of bows and crossbows might be trying to cash in on the archery motifs present in The Hunger Games ?

I'm assuming that it's because they've run out of bullets and the materials needed for reloads. Assuming it's a government/civilization breaks down kind of situation people are probably going to go through them at a fairly fast clip fighting over the spoils in the immediate aftermath and then protecting what they have after that, any proper ammunition left after 15-20 years would likely be extremely scarce and valuable. After a certain point if you don't have any more bullets then a .50 calibre or AK-47 is just an over-engineered club, a rifled musket with Minie ball ammunition is pretty much the best you can get mass produced for your army if you don't have the industry to manufacture metallic cartridges.
