J.F.K.'s itchy ankle

The date, November 22, 1963. The time, on or around 13:00 Mountain time. President John F. Kennedy is in his motorcade waving to the crowd and feeling good to be him, when his left ankle iches as if he stepped in a gnat's nest. It becomes so pronounced that he bends down and scratches furiously at it until it goes away. As he is doing so a bullet whizzes by over his back and kills the fellow in the front seat instantly. Not being an idiot and being a combat veteran, The President stays down as the motorcade moves out of the killing zone and toward the saftly of the Airfield. The dead man in the front seat is removed and Kennedy reaches A.F. One to find a very suprised Lyndon Bains Johnson. Johnson is suprised, because President Kennedy is still alive and apparrently unhurt. So what happens next?

The press will have heard the shot and seen the President slumped forwards. It will look like he was hit and be reported as such, the rumours will fly fast with many saying he was hit in the head. So yes Johnson would be surprised to see Kenedy alive and well.

Are you implying that JFK would be able to get back up under his own power?

Not likely. By that time his spine had degenerated so badly, he needed to wear two corsets to support himself.

The shooting would allow him to admit he had a back problem to the public and gain sympathy votes in the election.

His back damaged by his service in PT boats the young Senator Kenedy battled through the pain rising to be President. Now despite the pain and further damage caused by the shooting he leads the country forward into an era of great prosperity and equality. Like Roosevelt before him he skillfully leads this great nation and the free world from his wheelchair.

Pure PR bull of course but it presses alot of buttons.

You have Governor Connelly(SP) getting killed? Does JFK tell Jackie to get down? What do the Secret Service do? Do they jump on JFK? Or start blasting away at the scene of the shot? Is Oswald still the chief suspect?

LBJ would likely already know JFK survived by the radio traffic among the cars in the motorcade as he was in the motorcade himself behind the President. This is how the LBJ car wound up following the Kennedy car to Parkland.

As for the timing, 1300 Mountain time would be a bit late; Mountain time is an hour behind Dallas, which is in the Central time zone. 1300 MST = 1400 CST. By 1400 CST, JFK had been dead for an hour; the shooting was at 1230 CST, i.e. 1130 MST.

As you seem to be implying that LBJ was involved in a plot to kill JFK, I will play along ... Kennedy says, "Lyndon, you have five minutes to write your letter of resignation."

Why would Lyndon Johnson, who was riding in the same motorcade two cars to the rear of the President’s, be surprised to see Kennedy alive?

And as others have noted, Kennedy’s back brace would have prevented him from bending over to scratch his ankle, he’d just have to grin and bear it. Besides which, since the gunman was above and behind him, he’d still be visible and in the line of fire from the Book Depository window for several seconds until the limo accelerated. The car was going so slow that a Secret Service agent jumped off the side of the following car, ran forward three car lengths and climbed on the back of the President’s car. It was not a challenging shot.
