Italy goes CP

....the war will be over quicker, germany will have to open another front to defend italy...and waste more man power...

France would be the nation initially that would have been spread more thinly on the ground.

If in 1914, Italy declares war on the Entente mobilises and invades southern France then the Germans having victory in France becomes much more of a reality.

Also, that frees up AH troops to either join Italy as an ally in the Piedmont-Burgundy Offensive or to go East against the Russians.

Italy won't be breaking through into southern France unless the French are total idiots in their defence. Attacking through those mountains would be difficult at best...And the Italian army isn't very good.

Could be interesting for other fronts, you could see things being like WW2 with the entente grabbing Sardinia then attacking up Italy via Sicily. Perhpas rather then Gallipoli and all.

It wouldn't be a breakthrough but it would cost the French dearly in manpower and material. I think that this would have been enough to give the Germans victory.

In 1914 Italy decides to keep its commitments to the CP and join the war. Now What?
No second front for Austrian army, and second front for French.Probable war in north Africa like WWII.I think that The probability of victory for CP would have been much better, but im worried about North Africa and Sicily.

...u do have a point but it will be very bloody and soon, italy would be demanding german aid in the south which would draw away from the main front...but then again, the french too would be fighting on a second front...could make a difference in hte long run...

You're forgetting the Italian Fleet. Italian Fleet + Hapsburg Fleet + Goeben & Breslau = big problems for the Entente.

Italy hardly used it's fleet when it was allied with England and France why would it use it now that it is on the smaller naval side? It would keep a passive watch, and maybe engage if the coast was threatened.

I do think it should be noted that if Italy does join the war you get one of four things occuring:

1.) Germans gaining more ground in the begining, for yes Italy may not have had the best troops but men in uniform marching is always a good thing at the star tof the war. The French would most likely put their wieght against the Germans, but someone, most likely a politican, would demand something be done about the Italians. This would spread the French rather thin in the opening days of the war.

2.) Austria gets to put everything it has into Russia, and Serbia, but it will not really come to anything.

3.) Italy holds the front for most of the war, not invading, not going ont he offensive much, but tying up otherwise needed troops in the German front. At some point you would have to except a joint Italian-German-Austrian offensive coming from the the Italian lines. It could be a very effective move, for going along with this thought, it is a front no one thinks much of, so a coordinated effective force coming through the alps would certainly surprise the French.

4.) With Italy in the war, as well as Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire, Romania sides with the CP's as well. For in OTL they chose to join the Entente using the arguements Italy did of, "They started te war." Romania had a treaty with AH after all. So now you get more manpower for the Western and Eastern Fronts.

All in all, the CP's may have a shot at victory. Of course all this may do is allow us to witness the Austrialians fighting the Battle of Rome instead of the Battle of Gallipoli.

If France has to divert some forces to the South does that not mean that Paris and or the Northern Coast would fall to Germany, Does this not result in France seeking whaterver terms it can get.

I assume that Italy gets Nice and Savoy and Germany gets some French colonies.

That is possible, but it is also assuming that Germany does not lose its momentum which it very well could. It's army was going fast, so fast the logistics where having trouble, so you may easily get the tale of the German army forced to retreat to protect its rear or flank from a French counter attack.
