Not just Italians going to Argentina. Also lots of Poles and Germans and Hungarians....
Less North Americans, more South Americans. In South America the war of the Triple Alliance was over. No conscription to scare people away. Probably a lot more Australians.
Anyway, a war where the Confederacy won might be more successfull at keeping people away from America. Maybe ten years of guerilla war, and then a four way split as America fractured into the West, the Plains and the East, the South, and Texas. I'm going to make Texas into a black majority state as the black people fled the fighting in the south and moved to the frontier. Add Louisiana to Texas, Oklahoma, and eastern New Mexico.
So the armies are drafting young men and standing to arms along the borders...and the Europeans are looking at other places like Australia, South America, and South Africa. Bet you the Cape colonies will be much bigger than the Boers and there is no Boer war. Just Boer farmers in a minority with large Dutch speaking cities from the Dutch, German, and Scandinavian emigrants that did not go to America.
Yeah, you have a good ATL, if you make the US split up over the civil war counterinsurgency and have large standing armies to conscript immigrants into.
