Israel loses the October war

In the October war, Israel fought against Egypt and Syria, which sought to gain the Sinai Peninsula and Golan heights, respectively, which had been lost in the six day war.(Egypt got the Sinai later in the Camp David Accords) What if they succeeded in this goal, what could the results be? Please note that they only get these areas, they do not partition Israel out of existence.

If Syria had captured the Golan Heights, Israel would have been forced to attack AGAIN to push Syrian artillery beyond range of northern kibbutz.

If Israel loses it won't much, only golan heights maybe gaza and West Bank at extreme worst, but since they have nukes it wouldn't have gone that far unless the leaders of both sides where insane

Egyptian and Syrian objectives were just restore their 1967 borders, they'll be happy to consolidate their gains if Israel threat to nuke them should they try to push for total victory (they won't anyways).

The implications is that the Peace Process between Egypt and Israel may be delayed, since the Israeli invincibility is broken.

Israel loses control of the Sinai and the Golan Heights. Sadat and Assad have a major propaganda coup and their positions are stronger. Meir loses power - either loses the next election or the coalition falls apart - and Israel is at Egypt's mercy should Carter try and bring about a peace deal.

Most likely Israel would attempt a peace with Syria to make the Golan demilitarised to ensure that Israel's north is not totally under threat.

What might be interesting to look at is how the status of both Assad and Sadat would have changed.

Both could have been seen as the 'leading lights' in the Arab world.

If we try to pursue this a bit, we might see that although both achieved a 'glorious defeat', a 'glorious victory' would have been better.

Could it have cemented their position enough to impact on Iraq?

It might be that Israel itself is not centre-stage anymore and will be over-shadowed by internal Arab policy shifts.

I could see both the USA and the USSR pushing Syria to agree to this, just to put an end to the headache. But everything isn't rosy for the ME after this... there is still the festering issue of the West Bank to deal with...
