Island of California

What if the island of California actually existed? Would it be its own country after the Spaniards left or become part of Mexico?

If the island of California actually existed (a rift forms in the distant past when the San Andreas fault lets loose), I think that the Spaniards might stay in California a lot longer than 1820. And depending on how far offshore the island is and if gold wasn't discovered there, they might not loose the island until 1898.
Question is, who would get it? Russia (from the north), Britain (from Canada) or the United States?

What United States?
What Britain maybe even.
Russia could possibly be pushing it if you're strict with butterflies even.

It'd be cool to see California become a haven for marsupials, akin to Australia. Of course, it'd have to be a ways off the coast of mainland North America.
