Islam replaces hinduism

I frankly would say it is impossible. Islam faced extreme resistance to India. Islam then did the impossible and conquered most of India and broke through the northwest which had stopped the White Huns during the Gupta period. Even with almost the entire land of the Hindus under Islamic rule, Hinduism persisted and eventually pushed Muslim rule out of the majority of the lands and without the British involvement, Muslim would likely of had an even worse deal.

Asking Islam to replace Hinduism is tantamount to Islam becoming the dominant religion in a already Catholic Europe. Let us not forget that until modern periods, politically, Hindustan was roughly a similar population to Europe (larger but not by huge amounts) and equally politically complex.

As a matter of fact, there should be a thread to discuss and compare the differences in the various Islamic struggles to conquer Hindustan and that of Europe. They are very similar to the eyes of the Muslim of the 700s-1400s.

Do you think that the Mughal Empire probably would have been overthrown by Marathas without English presence in Bengal?

Otherwise, what would cause them to collapse?

Possibly, but the Durrani had defeated the Maratha before then. I do however, find the Mughal to be doomed.

Mind you, most of my knowledge of Hindustan is from the period before the Mongol conquest.

I'm curious as to what the British did to help Islam in India, I'm not too familiar with the history of the Indian subcontinent.

The British being an outsider quelled the possible Hindu backlash and forced conversions that could have occurred once Islamic power broke down in India. Sikhs also benefited from this reality.

Why would that be inevitable? For several centuries before Vasco Da Gama one set of Islamic rulers followed another over northern India.
Well, with the age of nationalism it would be quite hard for Muslim rulers to continue ruling over Hindu majority India.

Exactly: for several centuries, Muslim rules in India were unable to convert a majority of the Indian subcontinent to their religion. The OTL ideologies of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries did not encourage conversion: I don't think it's a stretch to say the same lack of wholesale conversion would happen in a Muslim-ruled Indian subcontinent.

That being said, I think it's worth looking at the religious demographics of the British Raj before the Partition, which lead to widespread dislocation of both Hindu and Muslim minorities. I could be convinced that Muslim rulership could continue in the subcontinent with the right breaks
