Is there a chance the U.S. divided in 1796?

I was wondering, what would it take for the U.S. to divide into two parts after the 1796 election with one part being ruled by Adams and the other one by Jefferson?

If this happened, what would have been some of the major consequences and how would the map look like in 2013 in your opinion?

The US could have divided into multiple parts between Independence and the Civil War. However, I don't think a Presidential election would be a cause for it

Civil War anyone?
Over "states rights", namely the right of the states whether to ban slavery or not. They were afraid that Lincoln and the Republicans were going to free them all, so they seceded. Lincoln's primary objective was preserving the Union. However, he decided to turn this into a moral crusade to attract more volunteers from the North by banning slavery

More likely Hamilton rather than Adams. And while Hamilton might "rule", Jefferson would only govern.

I could see him going to it, although (rather what most people would be surprised by) rather unhappily. He has his home in New York, after all, which the New Englanders wanted as a part of their 'Northern Confederacy.'

Hamilton would then try to increase the power of the North as much as possible as it being his new country.
