Is the Philippines destined to be screwed in every history?

Silent majorities and "I was only following orders" is not a uniquely Filipino attitude. Factionalism isn't either. Nor clan politics, even.

Actually, the bribery and corruption etc was and still a big problem in the country since the spanish times..that is why I say lack of integrity, I remember there are mayors who allow the squatters to live in certain areas just to get votes.

Aside from Self-Hatred but also complacency and lack of integrity, there are also filipinos who have integrity and patriotism like me, I feel insulted by this problem.

I am angry at you and Joseph Solis. That is all I have to say in this matter.

I want a socially (at the very least) liberal, Pro-LGBT, centralized, protectionist (at least in the beginning), economically prosperous Philippines that takes pride in its own culture and traditions and people!

Am I evil and the scum of the earth for wanting that?!

Before it crosses PolChat territory, let's wind down a bit. I don't want this thread to be moved, since we could use this as a reference for future Philippine ATLs.

Then what we need is to eliminate complacency and corruption early on.

Nope, same here.

Anyway another POD I have in mind is were Novales Revolt is more successful with his brother opening the gate but the revolutions still fails in the long ruin with the Spanish forces in the islands defeating him. Though news of it spreads worldwide and Stamford Raffles in Singapore at the time of the revolution advocates for the annexation of the Philippines due to its strategic position.

So Britain goes to war with Spain. Cuba, Puerto Rico, Philippines are occupied. We can make it worse for the Spanish with the Brits occupying the Canaries though this British-Wank POD is already horrible for the Spanish who were in decline after losing its America colonies

At this point, Britain returns Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Canaries in exchange for the Philippines. Its settled and the Philippines becomes a British colony and in the long run, the Philippines will have better outcome as a British colony and later as a Dominion of the Empire. (Kapuluan, East India, anyone :D)

This POD has an insane amount of butterflies especially for East/SE Asia that we could discuss and expand upon.

Now, if the British still has Malaya at this point, what are the chances that OTL Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines would be considered a single country, at least at the moment of independence?

Edit: Could Thailand also fall under British influence at this TL? This can give rise to a situation where you can walk from Cape Town to Singapore and ride a ship to Manila without ever leaving British territory.

Interesting idea. But you suck at making names. :p

For all we know, the English might still call it Philippines, this time after some random English noble.

The last time the British would have a go on the Philippines is the seven years war. By 19th century, Philippines under Spain was part of the British informal empire. And there was such a large recognized imbalance of power in 1890s compared to 1760s between Spain and Britain, that Spain wouldn't have gone to war with Britain.

Considering the bullshit they pulled with India, We'd be left with Palawan and Mindanao as part of Malaysia and a native Ifugao state in the mountains.

Being under Britain would be even worse for us as a nation than the Spanish ever were.

I dont think is bad. Mindanao comes with a problem. Malay peninsula doesnt have the manpower to overcome that problem.

Besides, the situation would have differed in atl. Borneo and mindanao would have been one entity, Malaya being another while Luzon being another. And only Luzon has the population to populate all those lands from Malaya to Mindanao to Borneo.

A separate Luzon entity is a wank for Luzon but a nerf for Mindanao and Visayas.

Under the British assuming acquired after 1890s, the Filipinos would have been treated like the French Canadians or more or less in a dominion like status. Before the 19th century you can technically separate Luzon from Visayas due to the lack of idea that they are one nation.

This is literally the worst thing that can happen. The Philippines is already one nation in 1823, the sparks of the idea are there.

And Britain would fuck it up, dividing it along caste and religious lines, creating a Moroland, Pagan Territory, and Philippine Dominion and forcing a strict racial division between the Latins, Indios, and Sangleys. Look at Malaya itself, and how they formed Singapore. Look at the Indian Partition. Look at Australia's Lost Generation, and how they treated the Afrikaners in South Africa, let alone the native blacks and Indians.

Like it or not, Visayas and Mindanao hold a lot more resources than our third of the nation.

I think Luis Valera did coin the Filipino but still, it was too vague at what it includes, and we will never know now in actuality because he and Novales are blocked by the latter's fucking brother!

True. Still, Britain coming along and annexing the Philippines (already Catholic-ridden and full of brown people in their eyes), bringing with them horrible laws which serve only to separate and antagonize the ethnicities of this nation against each other... well, it won't make the Philippines any less fucked up.

It shouldnt be an issue in the long term.

The Moros dont have any significant amount of population to populate Mindanao or Borneo. If Philippines were a British colony and Rizal were alive, the Borneo project migrating Filipinos, Catholics to Borneo would have happened.

The same thing happened with the Americans otl management in Mindanao. They didnt rely on the Moros to populate Mindanao. They relied on the Christian Filipinos.

Regardless, war Spain vs Britain wont happened if there is so much imbalance of power and Philippines already belonging to the British Informal empire especially in the 1890s. You need somewhat parity to have this happen which is why I place the situation Seven years war.

Like it or not, Visayas and Mindanao hold a lot more resources than our third of the nation.

The most important resource is people. And Luzon has more of those. Even up today, Mindanao's natural resources is not optimized, because some people in Mindanao is waiting for someone else to do it rather than doing it themselves.

You can develop without Natural resources but cannot develop without a competent populace.
