About a year ago a long discussion began on the paradox forum after someone said that the Ottoman empire should be named "Turkey" for historical reasons (and because in his gameplay the ottoman dynasty died out), and in the following posts he showed dozens of maps, from the early 1500s all up WWI showing the Ottoman empire named as Turkey, or as "Ottoman Turkey" in some cases, like we call Arabia as "Saudi Arabia", the thread was closed ages ago but it this discussion seemed to be inconclusive, until this video showed up:
At exact 4:00 he gives a close into the ottoman empire on this map made in 1868, and it is called "Turkey"
Based on that I came here to ask this: Is the name "ottoman empire" a modern construction, like calling the Eastern Roman empire as "Byzantium"? At the ottoman era, how the turks called themselves? When did the "Ottoman empire" name was adopted?
