Is the british empire invincible?

Umm... when I said surrendered I don't mean unconditional surrender, like in 1940. Obviously if the germans capture of all France they might be able to use the french ports (maybe), but I don't see how they'd be able to actually do that.

Any surrender on France's part will be a conditional one and I don't believe they'd accept that Germany would continue their war in France. Lets remember the situation was completely different in 1917 than 1940. The type of warfare practiced in 1917 wasn't condusive to large offensive thrusts and capture of large areas of territory in a short amount of time without many losses.

There are more than one kind of surrender.

theres too many poms on here :p and they seemingly wank up the british cause no matter what.

Doesn't have to be 1940. Just 1918 in reverse would suffice. If the French are as "on the ropes" as Germany was in OTL's 1918, they'll have no compunctions about making a deal at Britain's expense. If it saves the bulk of the French Empire, German use of France's Atlantic ports would be cheap at the price.

Once the poilus have been told officially that the war is over and France has lost, do you really believe they'll carry on (or resume) fighting for the sake of an ally they never much liked anyway - and which for all they know may even now be seeking a deal of its own at France's expense?

I've noticed a slight twist on this actually. I think a lot of people see Gnaldna s this green and pleasant land, with its industry backwards and more primitive than German SCIENCE!

In actuality, Britian's educational isntitutions were still top notch in the first half of the 20th century, and it had the financial resources of half the world to draw upon. (And did).

Building a bit on Faeelin's post, the British benefited from a host of historical, geographical, geological, agricultural, societal, cultural and agricultural perks that placed it in a better position to exploit the world than any other power during the 17th thru 20th centuries. Being able to outlast or even outspend one's enemies, is also a useful trait. Britain had the habit of losing battles but winning wars. She had resources, manpower, mineral and financial, which gave her an edge over any European rivals.

Exactly; it was a wise man/poster who said that every country that was ever a power has been wanked at one time or another. See Spanish control of half of Western Europe and all (at the time) of the Americas, the Dutch control of Indonesia (whats the population disparity again?) and the Chinese (massive-technological-development-and-cultural-hegemony thing). The British were wanked (India, peope!!) like the rest, but they were wanked at a time that was a)very recent b)the Industrial Revolution and C)the age of Empires. Look at 1914; the only other colonial powers (with actual power and worldwide projection) were the U.S (isolationist, tiny army and navy) and France (which ruled over some Godforsaken deserts and jungles with very friendly nati...wait, what's in this coffee again?). The British were a power, with real good land with real resources and benefits. Heck, both the U.S and France were rebublics. That was their wank. They were the Empire.
