Is LBJ winning in 1968 ASB?

Everything I have read and been told by some pretty major actors in the US government during that time period. Plus two men who worked for both JFK and RFK . One guy who became a US Senator all three of them said these things. 1. RFK wanted to be VP in 64. 2. He was loyal to the party. 3. He hated LBJ but Nixon was the enemy on the other side and he did not want him to ever be President. So after talking to one of those guys last night, Senator McGovern I think he would have taken the VP job in 68. Before hand I did not think so. Now there memory of everything is more than 40 years old. But they are primary scources.

I would not take McGovern as the best source on this subject. LBJ's biographers, Schlesinger, Thomas and other primary sources (NYT, Time, Newsweek) all agree.

I am not aurging with you. But the man was alive then and talked to him a lot of times. He was involved in the off the records stuff we never see in the history books. i have been involved in many of those things. It is funny to read a book about some thing that you know the story is different that what really happened. McGovern and RFK were good friends. But I don't think we will 100% ever know. Only RFK knows for sure. He did say that RFK was a very quiet man and did not tell people everything he knew. That he was very shy and felt the loss of JFK to the day he died. Also that JFK was always trying to make peace between RFK and LBJ. GOOD topic. We need more people to talk about it and maybe get into how LBJ beats Nixon.

Two alpha males in the same party with designs at the top job. Something was bound to happen even if everything had been peachy.

How can LBJ beat Nixon? By releasing theChennault-RVN conversations intercepted by illegal wiretapping. It would damage national security and cause massive damage for both men, which is why HHH ultimately dissuaded LBJ from releasing that info IOTL.

I think LBJ could have found away to release the wiretaps. Would he have done it different if he was running for President in getting them? Very good question. I think he would have done what Nixon did in 72 and stopped the bombing and put the screws on the south.

If LBJ wins again, he dies before the 1970 midterms from a heart attack. President Humphrey, then if the economy continues to flounder, President Reagan in '72.

A McCarthy candidacy would be bleeding almost exclusively Democratic votes. WA, NY, PA would all be endangered if that happened. Nixon's margins go up in the Rust Belt and California as well.

Not exclusively, you'd also get a bunch of votes from people who abstained OTL
