Irish nationalism in the Hebrides?

What steps would need to be taken so that eventually, all or part of the Hebrides (perhaps the Outer Hebrides) might feel a common identity with the people of Ireland and sympathize with some form of Irish nationalism. Perhaps they come to be seen as part of a greater Ireland and end up as part of an Irish-based state rather than a British one. I don't think it would be difficult, considering the common linguistic and cultural ties and the isolated nature of some of the outer islands... Is it possible, and if so when?

There is no particular reason why they should any more that Scottish whom the Scot element who came from Ireland should. As for being part of a greater Ireland, considering that they were controlled by the Norse until Somerled threw them out one should be looking at their Nordic roots.

I think Hebridean nationalism would make more sense. Now the only question is, does Hebridean nationalism exist? To Wikipedia!

Is there any particular reason why they can't be Irish?

Many of Ireland's cities were established by the Norse, too. Ultimately, Gaelic survived as the local language in the Hebrides and Norse didn't.
