Iranian Revolution gone worse

lets say that in 1979 Jimmy Carter flys to Iran to meed Mohammad Reza ( last shah of iran) to discuss his upcomming medical trip to the U.S. The meeting goes well and they decide to accompany each other in a helicopter back to the Tehren airport. Unfortunately one of Khomeni's guards spots the offical seal on the helicopter, so he yells خدا بزر است ( god is great) he fires the RPG and the helecopter falls out of the sky and crashes. Both people onboard survive, upon the helicopter crashing a large gathering of people saw the helicopter crash and followed it to its crash site. The crowd sees the shah and president carter lieing on the ground, they proceed to beat them to a pulp when yet another of Khomeins guards sees the crash survivors and orders the crowd to bring them to a house where they are to be prisoners. Khomesi is imediatly told about the crash and goes on live television and tells the world that Jimmy Carter annd the shah are in his custody and are going to be tried for crimes against islam the next day. The trial comes and both are sentenced to death by hanging. A hidden reporter has a camers and is recording the trial & execution of both men, he sneaks out of iran and shos the tape to the world. The bodies of carter and the shsh are left hanging in tehran for all to see. Carters v.p Mondale is inagurated as president, carter is now a martyr so thet means mondale gets reelected in 1980 (no regan) What happens? Does america intervene to recover carter's body and for revenge against the ayatollah? what is the worlds reaction (europe, soviets)

Wasn't Khomenei still in house arrest in France when the Shah left?
Yes, sir, he was. That being said, it is certainly possible for an Islamist or member of Tudeh or the Mojahedin or some other anti-Shahist organization (which there was no shortage of) to do something along these lines.

for anyone interested in persian/iranian history

if you want to learn about part of the amazing history of persia,I suggest you read this book: Blood & Oil A princes Memoir of Iran From the Shah to the Ayatollah by Manucher Farmanfarmaian

A country that executes a siting President is going to have a lot of pain inflicted upon it. This new Iranian government would not last as America would bring its force to bear upon it (yes, even for Jimmy Carter). Perhaps a great victory would bring the disgrace felt from Vietnam to a quicker end. The Soviets might officially protest American action so close to their own border, but with them tied down in Afganistan, they'd be busy. Besides, they would love to see America bogged down in another foreign war. War in the Persian Gulf would hit the oil market, and the speculators would start buying futures and drive the prices up (that's not to say the shortage of oil when Gulf States stop producing won't have its own impact-- better to have higher prices and shortages of supply-and-demand, than to have price caps and no fuel at all). Maybe this would open up more drilling for oil in America to compensate.

a bit of extra info: when Khomeni was in exiled from Iran went FRANCE!!! How bad would american/french diplomatic relations be after president carter's execution by the very man that the French were granting assylum to.

colors of irans flag- red, white, red

I'm curious as to how the Soviets would react to the presence of a very large number of American soldiers right next to the Turkmen, Azeri and Armenia SSRs...

America annihilates Iran from the face of the earth.

Agreed. Killing a sitting President would be much too far; there will be a very large part of the US public demanding that nukes be used. They probably won't be used, but it's still a threat.

I imagine that the Soviets might somewhat welcome the crushing of an Islamist country as an example to the Afghans; other than that, they will be very nervous about a large number of US troops on their border. They probably won't make a big fuss about it, though; the Iranians DID murder a sitting president.

An RPG (РПГ-7) to take down a helicopter in flight? ASB. Unless the helicopter was flying very, very low and slow.

They (the Iranians) wouldn't be stupid enough to take out two leaders at the same time. At least, I hope they wouldn't be, for their sake.

If American troops invade Iran, Soviet troops will invade Iranian Azerbaijan, simple as that. The Soviets were planning on doing that anyways in case things "got out of hand" in Iran, even going so far as to have Soviet troops stationed on the border. They may even go so far as to occupy Mashhad, but that's doubtful since the Soviets don't have any long-term interests in Khorasan, whereas they were planning on (eventually) annexing Iranian Azerbaijan.

If he catches it on take-off or landing, he has a good chance IMO.

Iran is invaded and occupied by the US.

On the other hand, it's gonna be one hell of an insurgency with the USSR right over the border smuggling weapons.

I'm sorry to stop this here, but why? Why is the President of the United States flying into the middle of a very unstable foreign country to discuss terms with an unpopular leader that can easily be hashed out through intermediaries. Where the hell are Carter's guards; are there any security measures in place, because it sure doesn't sound like it? For that matter, if the Shah is still in the country, where are his own security forces? If the mere sight of the official seal is enough to prompt weapons fire from the revolutionaries (something which, to my knowledge, was never the case), why on earth are they both in a marked chopper without any sort of escort? Why is Khomeini in the country at the same time as the shah (there were about two weeks separating one's departure and the other's arrival)? And are the Iranians really thick enough to execute the POTUS?

I'm calling ASB on this scenario. It's just way to contrived.

Tell that to the crews of Super 61 and Super 64...
Yeah, if the president was killed, Tehran would be seeing B-52s and Minutemans...

General reasoning

Due to some people thinking my thread is ASB I feel I should explain some of the logic

Carter visiting Iran- he goes there to ask the Shah to grant more freedoms to his people and to tell the people of Iran not to resort to violence because that will only cause them more pain and suffering

helicopter shot down- if you want maybe the RPG shooter had several with him in case he misses. So maybe he misses the first shot ,but the sescond one hits its mark and the helicopter begins to stall, he then shoots a 3rd and fatal RPG that dooms the helicopter to crash.

Carter being unguarded- in the helicopter there would be several guards but due to the crash they would be killed, now its assumed that if the u.s prez is traveling in a foreign country in a helicopter he would have ground support. There would most likely be several cars filled with secret service agents. Due to the chaos on the streets it is possoble that several cars may get lost, some may be attacked by angry mobs/khomeni militia and have to divert course

Khomeni returning to Iran- at that time he was in France forming a new revolutionary government. but it is assumed that if the Shah & President Carter are captured he would hurry back home a few days early so he can take credit for the capture and his regime could recieve a publicity boost in the eyes of the Iranian people

Executions- i am not sure wether Khomeni would execute the u.s president(he might not be that insane) I do know that he wanted the shah extradited back to iran for trial where he presumably would have been shot. i just figured if both were executed it would make a real international incident. Reason for executions-crimes against islam- im not sure what type of crimes those would be but i just liked the way it sounded. جنایت علیه اسلام=crimes against islam in persian

Black Hawk Down, anyone? Hell, we lost a Chinook in Afghanistan like that. We almost lost a second but the warhead was a dud.
