In the late 70's before the Islamic revolution Iran had ordered for 300 F16 after the overthrown of Shah the order was cancelled and 79 end up in Israel if the Iranians had it during the Iran-Iraq war? and will be operational up to present day?

So we're basically replacing the Tomcats with F-16s? They'd be way easier to service, since there's spare parts all around the world now. Sure, the IRIAF would be flying F-16As, which aren't exactly the cream of the crop but the chances are probably pretty good they'd be upgraded by now.

They're a much more forgiving aircraft from the maintenance standpoint. And the aircraft they'd be taking on in combat (MiG-23s and Mirage F1s) are within it's capabilities. It's the MiG-25s that freak me out. The F-14 was picked precisely because it had the speed to chase down the Soviet interceptors. Without that speed the Foxbat just can't get caught and the Iranians will have to hit them on the ground or something.
