Iran-Iraq War: Alternate Outcome?

I am curious if there could have been more of a victory for either side in this war. I don't know very much about it, but could Iraq have defeated Iran early on? Looking at the geopolitical situation it seems unlikely that the US would have let Iran "win," but is there a way they could have anyway?

If Iraq had established air superiority the war would likely have been concluded in a quick, victorious way for Saddam. As it were, the Iraqi air force lacked the heavy ordinance to destroy the Iranian air force's concrete hangars. Moreover, Saddam's forces should have been focus on Khuzestan and Khuzestan alone. In his historical battle plan at least part of his force was up around Baghdad where it had no earthly business. So these are two obvious PoDs. Now the first immediate consequence would be that Iraq isn't very damaged, allowing it to become a major regional power in the 80s and 90s. Whether Khomeini's regime falls is anyone's guess.

I seriously wonder about that. The Iraqi ground forces did so badly against a force that had been utterly gutted at every level by the Revolution that I wonder if there was a way they could have ever won it where it mattered.
