In Book I of the Persian Wars, Herodotus says that during the Persian conquest of Ionia, Bias of Priene suggested that his fellow Ionians "join in one body, set sail for Sardinia, and there found a Pan-Ionic city; so they would escape from slavery and rise to great fortune, being masters of the (sic) largest island in the world, and exercising dominion beyond its bounds; whereas if they stayed in Ionia, he saw no prospect of their ever recovering their lost freedom." How plausible would such an action have been historically, and if the Ionians had accomplished it, how would they fare in the long run? Could they have held out against the overwhelming push of the Carthaginians?
