Inviting monarchs remains popular

What if inviting foreigners to become monarchs upon vacancy or indpendence (like Belgium, Romania, or Norway) remained common into the 20th century and after WWI?

Very unlikely in Britain, possible in Holland maybe, but with monarchs being virtually powerless it's not like it's gonna make a difference.

New states started popping up as a result of decolonization and I dubt to many wanted a new, European monarch in those days (but it would be way cool if it did happen.) As for post-communist era...

Well a restoration of the monarchy in Romania might be possible although I don't know if that counts as introducing a monarch. I heard the current claimant to the throne has some popularity and he has even been PM of Romania I think.

I think you're confusing Rumania and Bulgaria. To my knowledge in both countries the former Monarchs are relatively popular (that as far a defunct Monarchies go). In Bulgaria the former Tsar, Simeon II, was the Bulgarian Prime Minister from 2001 - 2005, however he has not made his views on the restoration of the monarchy known, and has not used the Title Tsar of Bulgaria since the collapse of Communism.

A good PoD would be World War I. Versailles and St.-Germain dethroned many a dynasty and generally marked the end of monarchy as the standard condition of European countries. Suppose the CP got a deal similar to Japan after WW2 - the Hohenzollerns and Habsburgs could sit on their thrones, write poetry, and march in parades, but constitutionally could do very little else. Similar monarchs could have been enthroned for Hungary, yes, for Czechoslovakia, and even for Poland. It would have required more support for the idea of monarchism at the end of the war. Not sure how to bring that about.

[EDIT] I re-read your post, and the idea of a more successful Romanov dynasty makes sense. Maybe the Czar was more careful in his prosecution of the war - not enough to stave off the Revolution forever, but long enough to ensure him a place at the bargaining table in 1918.

Well I guess if the British monachy instead of Governor General give Australia, New Zealand, Canada etc their own king or queen out of victoria's children.

Query: what would NZ's status be? Canada would be a Kingdom, I imagine Australia, too. Would NZ be a 'Kingdom' or a 'Principality' (with a reigning prince?). NZ is pretty small.
