International Organizations

In my TL, instead of having a League of Nations or United Nations, various international organizations and bodies are growing independently and organically, for various reasons. Therefore they come out of many different areas and different concepts. I need some ideas for what issues are covered by international law from 1900-1925. I have gleaned soem ideas fromt he real League of nations and UN 'other bodies' but any mroe ideas will be helpful. Here are so examples from the TL so far.

ICOPH- International Center of Public Health, London, 1915

EAPO- European Anti-Piracy Organization, Malta, 1920

OCO- Organization on the Control of Opium, London, 1912

IBS- International Board on Slavery, New York, 1921

LB- Labor Board, Paris, 1917-23 (dissolved)

CDCW- Organization on Control and Documentation of Chemical Weapons, Paris, 1916

I don't need dates or places (you wouldn't know the various conditions) I am just looking for topics that might be covered. Any help, or is it confusing?

Well, other things that might be covered by international bodies would be:

Mail (so that there is a standardized, universal approach to international communication--the OTL version was founded in 1874)

Along with that, Telecommunications This one was founded before the IPU!

Something dealing with biological weapons, as well as chemical. (I assume nukes haven't yet been developed?)

Ocean Basically, something dealing with nautical matters, the laws of the sea, and so on. While the OTL version wasn't founded until 1948, it's certainly plausible that something similar could come into being sooner.

Aviation Again, not founded 'till later, but plausible earlier.

Meterology The IMO (now WMO) was founded in the mid-1800s. Again, an excellent plausible organization.

Perhaps some type of WTO/GATT organization, though that is likely to be multi-lateral but not truly international (in the sense of all or most nations belonging) in this timeframe.

I see you already have a WHO analogue.

Uh, that's about all I have. Most of the other UN agencies are obviously not appropriate for the time period, or are obvious reactions to WW2. Though OTOH your world might have refugee or human rights problems that people care about, in which case an international organization about those might be plausible.

Thanks for the help.Mail and Telecommunications are good ones!

Ocean will be covered by the anti-piracy one I gave. (Its power will be expanded later).

Oh, and yes, I did stumble upon meteorology, so I did mange to consider that. Aviation is a bit too early, along with bio weapons..I think.

Refugee...maybe, lots of white nations with problems here...thank you.

Any other, anyone else?

IOTL, the first International Criminal Police Congress was held in Monaco in 1914. While it took until 1923 when the INTERPOL was actually founded, I think under different circumstances one could plausibly have a similar organization come into being anytime between 1910-25.

There were a lot of Royal Societies in England that were expanded and attached to other groups outside of their own borders in the late 1800s to provide for the growth in scientific thought.

The eruption of Krakatoa was one such impetus: there was a Geological Society that ended up basically becoming the international clearing house for information on what would become known as plate tectonics as well as the beginnings of the study of evolution due to their information on plant and animal life on the various islands of the South Pacific and Indian Oceans.

The formation of the Oxford English Dictionary prodded the London Phillological Society to take a leading role in the English-speaking world, as well.

Though I like alternate wars and have posted probably hundreds of pictures of warplanes and of a few tanks, too, I am quite happy that this is one of those rare threads about peaceful co-operation.

How about the following goals for co-operation:

  • a common system of electrification for European railways

  • adoption of common systems for automatic couplers (Scharfenberg for passenger trains, Janney for freight trains?)

  • a common European gridlock system (if I remember correctly a common gridlock for Germany, the Netherlands and France was first realized during WW II)
I am sorry that I do not know which international organisations in OTL would have the authority to develop these, if any such organisations existed at all.
