International incident on East-West frontier leads to WWIII

This thread's inspired by watchin STRIPES when i was in Darwin- OK, WI a force of US soldiers, fully armed & equipped, strayed from FRG into GDR or Czechoslovakia sometime in the 1980s ? Would such an international incident have led to war between NATO & WARPAC ?

Actually, it used to happen.

Once, a jeep of soldiers wandered into the GDR by accident and ran into a convoy of Soviet troops in trucks and APCs. The Soviets stopped them, and one of the Red officers got out and walked up to the American jeep, then put a map down on their hood and explained that he was lost and asked if they could please direct him to a certain location.
While they were directing that guy to a certain location, another Soviet truck pulled up, and that group was lost as well.
