Riffing a bit from the Tarantino film Inglorious Basterds, in which Hitler, Borman, Goering, and Goebbels are all killed (sorry for the spoilers), what if those men were all killed in 1944 after D-day? Lets go for the quintuplet and say that Himmler was also killed. Would Germany be willing to make peace then?

Look, I know that this topic has been discussed to death, but that revolves around the death of only Hitler. I am wondering what would happen if the entire top Nazi leadership is killed simultaniously. Would peace then be possible, or is unconditional surrender the only way to go? Also, would Germany without these men be willing to surrender unconditionally?

What? How did you figure out the plot details? And you could have put it in the second paragraph...

Yes, the military situation was hopeless, the Generals knew it, the people felt it for a long time. The question is would the Allies be in the mood to offer the kind of unconditional surrender Japan got: http://www.ndl.go.jp/constitution/e/etc/c06.html

Well, Beck, Goerderler etc all banked on the idea that the Allies would be happier NOT to have to fight their way to Berlin, if Germany would surrender nicely. The question of whether it is an unconditional surrender or not is sort of moot here - the Allies cannot enforce an unconditional surrender at a distance, whereas if they agree an Armistice they are recognising the right of those who take power in Berlin to be there. That was one of the curious things about OTL May 1945 - a provisional government in Flensburg actually continued in existence for a few weeks until the Allies decided that its unconditional surrender had removed its right for existence

Best Regards

Hnau,

Huh? He put a spoiler warning in the thread's title.

If you didn't want to know you shouldn't have clicked in.

I didn't click in. I hovered the arrow over the link, and it showed a preview of the paragraph... wherein all the spoilers were shown. Was I warned enough even so? Sure. But he could have been a little more polite. Just a little gripe, nothing to get too worried over. :)

Sorry about that. I didn't realize that the whole thing would appear in the preview. As to where I discovered this, the script has been floating around the internet for months. I am fairly certain its real, as every clip that I have seen for the film, even those on the official website are almost verbatim what is in the script. It is going to be a violent film.

Basically, I am wondering if unconditional surrender would be palatable to the regular army and sane people in general if opposition doesn't exist from the nazis and others fanatics/war criminals.
