How could a war between India and China happen that would hamstring both countries into the 21st century? Would this leave the west dominant in the world economy?

they find out that the people that commited the mombai attacks were actually trained and based in china.

the masses would just be demanding war with china then.

Both of these guys are nuclear powers by 2000 though. You are going to have a FAR WORSE outcome here than anything ever seen on Earth.

Once you have a nuclear exchange the entire world is going to want to stop the fighting...one can only hope that's enough pressure to bring an end to the war, which China is likely to lose less than India.

Thats the reason why china needs such a large population i guess. In the case of nuclear war they will always have replacements.:D

True. In Maoist china, the population boom was incase of Nuclear Armageddon. there would be only several thousand Americans and Russians would be left....to be overrun by Millions of Chinese.

although in this case, Nuclear exchange between China and India would be nightmare.

as for China being responsible for Mumbai.....I think western China Has a large Muslim population, and so it might be possible for the terrorist to have been trained in China.
I maybe wrong about that though.

I just said that cause i couldent think of anything else. The Muslims are in Northwestern China though (i think).

The number of nukes that China and India actually have reserved for use on each other is quite small. China has to keep nukes in hand to deter Russia, US, Taiwan, Japan and Sth Korea, and the many possible permutations of these powers as well as India. India's much smaller arsenal has to deal with Pakistan as well as China. Thus nuclear exchanges in such a war could amount to 100-150 nukes all up, which compares to the atmospheric nuke testing in 1958 and 1962. So while that many nukes would kill possibly hundreds of millions of Chinese and Indians the worldwide fallout wouldn't be anything we haven't seen before.

A massive problem would be refugee exodous into the rest of the world, which may limit the west from inhereting the earth from these devastated combattabts.

I've actually got an interesting bit of an ATL that does more or less this. Planning to delve into it when I get The West is Saffron more settled...

Jed Eckert: ...Well, who *is* on our side?
Col. Andy Tanner: Six hundred million screaming Chinamen.
Darryl Bates: Last I heard, there were a billion screaming Chinamen.
Col. Andy Tanner: There *were*.

Let the 1962 War escalate. At the time NOBODY liked the PRC, especially the U.S. & USSR (although the U.S. didn't know it). China andvanes well into Indian Territory before one of the Big Boys lays down the law, which, of course, Mao ignores. Intervention by ground and air doesn't stop the PLAn and A leads to B which leads to Mushroom clouds (probably, although not certainly, courtesy of Moscow) over China.

India winds up torn to hell and China winds up short 15 or so major industrial areas.

I doubt it would ever come to a nuclear exchange - Indo-Pak IV in 1999 didn't, for instance.

...And damn you, Oskadave, for getting the Red Dawn quote first!

Heh. :D Classic film, wasn't it... My folks lived in Las Vegas NM for several yaers, and handily pointed out where vaious scenes were filmed and which locals had been extras. (LOL should have kept that typo "volk")

And the "Perfect War" scenario I've got in mind provides for a Indo-Sino "exchange"...

China and it's population is much, much more vulnerable to nuclear war then either the Americans or the Russians, if only by geography.
