Indian Elephants around the Mediterranean

Option 1.

Archaeology suggests that briefly around Sicily and Malta there were elephants - they were of small size much like the Sri Lanka Elephant. The Sicilian / Maltese elephants died out and the bones left behind - the nose-hole became an "eye-hole" and the Cyclops myth had a foundation.
Now, if the elephants survived they would likely end up as part of the Roman / Carthage War machine - or end up slain in gladiatorial combat at the circus.

Option 2.

Hannibal. He manages to get his Elephants into Italy. While laying siege to Rome (he is unsuccessful in breaching the walls of Rome, but damages them severely) two elephants escape - male and female. There you go, elephants in Italy.

Option 3.

Charlemagne. One of the Muslim Kings gave Charlemagne a gift - a pet elephant. He even took it on campaign with him - the Germans were quite impressed. Unfortunately, it got sick, and died. Instead of one elephant, the Muslim king sends two - male and female. There you go, elephants in France / Germany.
