Indian country names?

So I've been trying to find some good names for an Indian nation that could have survived to present time for something I'm doing.

So, does anyone have any good, original names (And not so original if that may be the case) for an alternate Indian nation?

[I didn't know where exactly to put this, so any Indian nations after 1900 should be alright. ;) ]

Indian as in India Indian, like having a balkanized India or Indian as in Native American Indian?

For the first one use the geographical / language divisions and regions in former control of the maharajas,.

For the latter one which I think you are referring to, use the tribe names and then anglicize the demonym. For example the country can be Lakota and for the outsider the people are named Lakotan by outsiders.

I kind of meant Indian, as in the country residing in present day India. :p

Realistically you need more than names, you need at least a basic understanding of the historical situation in order to figure out what is plausible. What sort of POD are we talking about here?

(Of course, technically plenty of Indian states did survive until 1947, they were just subordinate to the Empire).

Well the British still ruled India, its just that they had to grant independence after WW1 (Part of peace treaty after German forces smashed their forces in France) I know its not much, but I'm not very far ahead yet.

That would depend on what terms India became independent. If it's a radical republic like OTL then it'd smash and grab all the separate states if it could, just like it did in OTL in 1947.

Initially it seems like a good start would be all the 21-gun and 19-gun states would be in a good position to exert their independence.

The OTL Indian Anthem "Jana Gana Mana" can give a good idea for some of the names of nations should India balkanise after decolonisation/independence.

The second verse goes,

"Panjaba, Sindh, Gujarata, Maratha. Drabida, Utkala, Banga"

So to my knowledge, that's modern day Punjab, Sindh (which is now a part of Pakistan), Gujarat, Maharashtra, the Dravidian provinces (such as Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh), Orissa and Bengal.

I'm wondering if Bengal and Utkala also include modern day Chattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar in it's territories. Then you have princely states like Hyderabad and other territories like Meghalaya and Nagaland.

It's simply amazing to me how India has stayed united as it is with all the linguistic, cultural, ethnic, religious and caste differences.

No, but it does translate into the most prestigious, which could be a basis for them being granted total independence rather than being forced to amalgamate, as may be the case for less prestigious states.
