Awhile ago in the map thread a user from Indonesia complained about the lack of independent Indonesia's and the possibility of Indonesia 'pulling a Meiji'. I found this quite interesting and found a few possible POD's for it. I'm just wondering what everyone else thinks of it...

1811 - 1816: During the Napoleonic Wars Britian occupies the Dutch East Indies, while Holland in turn is being occupied by the French.

Change: The British -strained for resources and unwilling to commit them to a region were they are not needed- post fewer occupying forces in the DEI's, allowing native Princes to establish their own armies and rule regions of Java with the Colonial Government's consent.

Upon the return of the DEI's to Dutch control, large native armies remain around the country. Dutch attempts to disarm them, Dutch brutality, or rising nationalist tensions lead to a civil war between the Dutch and Javanese, in which the Javanese emerge victorious & independent.

or, a bit later...

1825 - 1830: The Java War, in which the Dutch Colonial Government ignites a Javanese revolt by building a road across the property of an aristocratic family.

Change: The Javanese win the war, capturing Yogyakarta early on in the war, defeating the small Dutch army through use of sheer numbers, and then capturing Jakarta. Dutch attempts to recapture Java are thwarted over several years, with the Dutch ultimately abandoning Java. The Dutch retain bases in Sumatra, the Mulocca's, and Sulawesi, though. Prince Diponegoro establishes a state, based in Yogyakarta.

In both, Javanese independence would be assured because of international implications of invasion, Javanese diplomacy, and a lack of desire to disrupt the regional power-balance. A British annexation of the islands would no doubt lead to repercussions in SE Asia, as the Spanish & Dutch protested their invasion; this issue could easily carry over to Europe, leading to conflict.

Decades after independence, Java could 'pull a Meiji', industrializing, Westernizing, and reforming. My initial concern is finding a plausible POD though, as well as guaranteeing Javanese independence and lack of European interference.
