Independent Interwar Slovakia

According to Wiki, the Czechs were the main party pushing for a united Czechoslovakia at the end of WWI while the Slovaks were somewhat chilly about it.

WI the Czechs were unable to force the issue, and for whatever reason Slovakia became an independent republic, separate from a Czech state? How would this affect the period between WWI and WWII, especially in regard to Hitler's actions directly before WWII?

Bright day
What Slovak group opposed Czechoslovakia at the end of WWI?

Slovaks-American groups were for. Slovak catholics were for - even Hlinka himself was ardent supporter and deleivered a rousing speech at sv. Martin link (very Slovak pro-independance) wiki on Hlinka. The Slovak protestants were always Czech oriented (they even tried to make Czech the official language of Slovaks back in 19th century).

Further how is Slovakia going to become independent? Who will drive Hungarians from Slovak Soviet Republic (Not that the bloody Czechs did much). Who will deal with the Big Four? Also If Slovakia is independant, Subcarpathia is likely to stay Hungarian.

So what are you left with? Small, poor country, its most avowed enemy bordering it from two sides. Poland to the north will not be equitable ally, Czechs have just been spurned and Austria is fast sinking.

Good point made by both of you...

Nevertheless, I plan to make a AH story about this - although this is going to be more of a POD, than a proper plot. Yeah, it will be quite a bit ASB, but... bloody hell... why not ? :D;):p

Ah, teba som tu ešte nezbadal. Tak, vítaj Ah.come, ľudí z bývalého Československa tu nikdy nie je dosť.

Hehe, tiež som už dlho špekuloval, či sú tu aj nejakí krajania. :) Takže, o tebe by som už vedel... :D Ďakujem pekne za uvítanie.

The Slovaks were tired of being under the Magyars and saw Czechoslovakia as the better deal.

That was the most important reason for the foundation and existence of Czechoslovakia in the first place.

It's just a funny little paradox, that many of the most avid proponents of magyarization (cca half of the 19. C - 1918) were infact of Slovak or other than Magyar origin... Heck, real Magyar-born politicians were less fanatical in the case of this whole forced ethnic assimilation policy, than the aforementioned turncoats. Heh, the irony...

Of course, there are lots of similiar analogies to this situation in the history of many other nations and states.
