If the Vikings settling the east coast of Ireland get chased away, either by the Irish, or by the English/Normans, that would be an available source of settlers to help colonize Vinland.


That's another interesting motive I do hope people in this thread will explore.

No one has answered the need for a motive. Yes, more colonists would increase the odds, but what is the motive for those colonists arriving?

Ahem:
Other ideas involve anything bad in Europe than make people want to flee far away. Maybe a far more harsh conversion to christianity?

I started a TL once that involved Ogedei Khan living a bit longer, and the devastating fighting with the Mongols triggering a wave of settlers fleeing in a millennial panic.

Anyway, on the subject of trade, Narwal horn was a high-yiels trade good. Most of the trade goods has the problem that they are harvested very far away from the good settlement areas, though.
