In the early US, what were the main areas of debate within states?

I'm trying to find out more about US politics in the 1780-1825 period. Specifically, I want to understand what were the main areas of political debate and electoral competition WITHIN states. In New England, the Mid-Atlantic and the South, what issues were state-level elections fought on? Which parties dominated the state legislatures, and why?

There seems to have been considerable trouble on economic issues, eg a lot of poor people were getting into debt and wanted some sort of moratorium on its collection. Iirc, in Kentucky the State Supreme Court declared this illegal, and the legislature tried to get round the decision by creating a totally new court. I think the fight between "Old Court" and "New Court" partisans dragged on for a decade or so.

The expansion of voting rights to non-propertied males was a big issue - in Rhode Island, it even led to a rebellion.

Public education, and who should pay for it, was also a controversial issue in a number of states.
