In the aftermath of a more brutal or different Great War, how badly could these nations lose?

So, how badly can these countries become after a different world war 1.
  • Germany
  • Belgium
  • France
  • Netherlands
  • Russia
  • Italy
  • UK
  • USA
  • Japan
  • Ottoman Empire/ Turkey
  • Austro-Hungarian Empire

Note: They don't all have to be screwed in the same timeline, they can all happen in different individual timelines.

Germany gets divided into 4 or 5 small kingdoms and loses plenty of territory: Alsace and Lorraine as well as the Rhineland are returned to France, while Schleswig and Holstein return to Denmark, East Prussia to Poland, etc. Bavaria elects a communist government while Prussia becomes increasingly authoritarian. The Ruhr industrializes faster, increasing disparity with agricultural states.

Belgium gets divided into 3 distinct language zones (Walloon, French and German-speaking).

France loses a chunk in its South-East to Italy. France loses Alsace and Lorraine to Germany. France's overseas colonies revert to local rule.

Arab pirates ravage the Med.

Th Netherlands gets divided into multiple provinces isolating Catholics in the South, Protestants in the western provinces and Frisland off on its own. Economic disparity increase as poor farmers get poorer while (citified) merchants grow richer.

Russia is devastated by its Communist Revolution. Because Bolsheviks never gain a clear advantage, White Russians (Czarists) dominate their traditional estates, while capitalists dominate new cities. Estonians, Karelians, Kazars, Uzbeks, Georgians, Chechnians, etc. minorities declare their independence and Kievian Russ loses most of the terrain it conquered over the preceding 500 years. Lack of a standardized rail gauge cripples long-range trade.

Italy losses the Tirol to Austria, Sicily to Arabs, etc. and reverts to the dozens of tiny kingdoms it had before Garibaldi (1848).

The U.K. fractures into separate British, Welsh, Irish and Scottish kingdoms after losing most of her overseas colonies.

The USA deteriorates into 7 distinct nations: New England, Mid-West, Cascadia, South-Western desert, Deep South, Alaska and rust-belt after losing most of her overseas possessions. Petty customs duties cripple continental trade.

Ainu regain control of Northern Japanese Islands, Okinowans re-gain self-rule while the home-islands revert to feudal estates ruled by feuding samurai. Korean pirates raid at will along the Japanese coast.

As the Ottoman Empire collapses, Turkey is reduced to the Anatolian Penninsula allowing most traders to by-pass traditional trade routes. Because Kamal Ataturk died during WW1, Turkish Muslims lack a unifying leader.

The Austro-Hungarian Empire collapses into two separate kingdoms: Austria and a separate kingdom ruled by Hungarians. Along the way, A-H loses trouble-some tribes in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Dalmatia, Kosovo, etc. After losing the Dalmatian Coast, Austria loses access to shipping in the Mediterranean.

Switzerland loses Locarno to the Italians and its massive, agricultural Vallee to France. Several German-speaking cantons join Austria or Germany, reducing Switzerland to its original 5, German-speaking cantons. Bridges and railways fall into disrepair

Scandavian nations renew old blood feuds, raping and pillaging their way around the Baltic the same at that Vikings raided their neighbors a thousand years earlier.

How would either France lose Alsace-Lorraine or would Italy lose the Tirol if neither owned them before the end of WW1? And, really, pillaging vikings?

Welp, I'll bite. I'll try to stay on reasonable screws, though - I don't like randomly destructive scenarios.
  • Germany - A worse year for agriculture helps the Communists foster resentment in the German people, leading to Red Germany emerging - and promptly engaging in a standoff with Poland, which gets supported by the Entente as the anti-Communist bastion. French seizure of the Rhineland follows, dragging back to a short and destructive war; the outcome is a coup by Freikorps-inspired militias, which are forced to yield some border areas to Poland and forced to endure a longer, harsher French occupation of the Rhineland.
  • Belgium - Ends up partitioned by Germany and France as a way to mantain power balance in the Continent in a 'limited CP victory' scenario. That, or a determined push to free it which ends up with the war being fought all on its territory, which is definitely harsher for the people involved.
  • France - The Germans manage somehow to convince the Italians to drop in through Treaty of London-esque terms, which then get partially applied after victory alongside the German Septemberprogramm. End result is the loss of some African colonies, Tunisia, and Corsica or Nice plus very heavy war indemnities.
  • Netherlands - Gets baited into helping the Entente, at the same time in which Germany pushes through France and snags an early victory. Is forced to become a 'close partner' of the German Empire, which can essentially bully them as it pleases.
  • Russia - Poland manages to do better against the Soviets, forcing the birth of an Ukrainian Republic of sorts, then goes away leaving the Reds weakened and unable to fight off the Whites. Which promptly get at each other's throats, until somebody manages to piss off the Poles who gladly strike deep again.
  • Italy - the Austrians manage to break through at the Piave, forcing Italy to drop out. Libya is restored to the Ottoman Empire, Eastern Friuli goes to the KUK, and Italy is coerced into helping out 'their old allies' against France. Which ends up in an eventual loss thanks to the US entry, and the additional cession of the Aosta Valley and parts of Western Liguria to France, while the last colonies - Eritrea and Somalia - become French.
  • UK - Gets more indebted than OTL through a failure of the Arabian Campaign and generally less interest in the US for supporting it. Ends up having to patch up France in a more successful final German thrust, and has to relinquish a lot of influence at the peace conference table due to greater French mistrust.
  • USA - Germany manages to drag Mexico almost in, at which point the US Government takes notice and spends time and human lives making sure Mexico reconsiders. This forces them to slog more on the European theater, as they arrive late, due to a better German situation. Still winners, but ugly ones, and even faster to fall into isolationism.
  • Japan - They try to take New Guinea, and end up quarreling a lot with Australia for it, only to be pressured into renouncing it formally with great loss of pride which leads to militarist coups, and a rash outlook on the future.
  • Ottoman Empire/ Turkey - Greece gets on the Entente train early, together with Italy and Romania. This leads to a way faster collapse of the Ottomans, and of course an easier time for the Greeks to seize their Megali Idea borders with full recognition. This discredits the reformers, leading to a stiffening of the age-old Sultanate which is reduced to only most of Anatolia, but not all of it.
  • Austro-Hungarian Empire - A prolonged war much like OTL, except that Italy does better early on, meaning no Caporetto and a stronger position; this forces the Empire's South Slavic position to try harder, leading to more weapons flowing around when the frontline collapses. Oh, and Italy will engulf and attempt to Italianize more Germans and Slavs.

1914
The war begins in 1914 and begins with Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and Italy declaring war on the Entente Powers. Italy enters after a bad colonial incident that turns public opinion against both France and Britain. Due to America being lead by Teddy Roosevelt instead of Woodrow Wilson the United States enters the war on the side of Britain. The Germans push in to Belgium and France and Belgium, but are stopped before reaching Paris. Border conflicts break out between Italy and France as the Austro-Hungarian navy begins to cooperate with the Italians in the Mediterranean. Italian soldiers are deployed to the Western front, where mass casualties occur in a bloody stalemate. War for Germany's colonies occur throughout the world, as Japan enters the war to seize them.
1915
The first American troops arrive on the Western front, poorly equipped due to war profiteering. Romania also joins the war on the side of the Central powers, helping in the fight against Russia. Americans troops fair poorly against German soldiers, causing large scale casualties and for more to be sent over to help replace the casualties. Together Italy and the Ottoman Empire begin a joint offensive against Egypt, aiming to cut off the Suez Canal. After a bad diplomatic incident war against the Netherlands is declared by the Entente, with the USA navy and British Fleet blockading the country and attacking Netherlands colonies in the Pacific. This effort is joined by Japan. Despite losses the Germans are pushed back on the Western front, raising hopes that the German forces could collapse due to an inability to replace manpower.

France during WWII and Germany after the same are pretty much worst case scenario for them both. If occupied Northern France considers Vichy to be traitors, maybe they drag their feet on reunification. In that case, West Germany may not happen either.

The US would need a POD pretty far back to have WWI go badly for them. On the other end of the scale, OTL Austria-Hungary disintegrated during the war, the people of Vienna starved, and the Balkans continued to be unstable right up to the 1990s. Short of a Yellowstone - like super eruption, it couldn't have gone much worse for them.
