Chapter One

Time: December 1990 - January 1991

The VH-3 helicopter landed on the helicopter pad at Camp David. The Camp David detachment immediately opened the helicopter' s doors, letting the President and the First Family out.

The meet and greet that was originally planned to be held, that allowed POTUS to shake hands with party donors, staff, and congressional leadership had been canceled. The president was not in the mood and wasted no time heading to the Presidential Situation Room.

The Presidential Situation Room was as the name implied, the Camp David version of the Situation Room. Created during the LBJ administration, the "Situation Cabin" as staff liked to call served well as a secure bunker for Presidents to be briefed and make important military decisions when away from the White House or Kneecap.

When the Commander in Chief arrived at the cabin, the heads of the military and intelligence agencies were already in place. The commander in chief took his seat and prepared for briefing.

"So let's get started." DDCI John Valley stated. The DDCI meant Deputy Director of Central Intelligence. The DCI (Director of Central Intelligence) George Watson was in Britain meeting with the head of MI6. It didn't particularly matter that he wasn't there since Valley was just as competent and had more experience in the Agency than Watson who was formerly an Admiral.

In front of the president and military/intelligence leaders were maps of Iraq and a large screen. "Mr. President, about a week ago mole secretly working for Israel inside Iraq was keeping tabs on the Iraqi political and military leadership. This source has given the coalition pre knowledge on where the Iraqis battle attack in Kuwait and had allowed for them to be successfully countered."

"This source has also gave us intel on potential terrorist attacks on the US secretly supported by the Iraqi government through funding."

The DDCI took a sip from a glass of water before continuing." The Israelis have lost contact with their source and says there is a possible chance he was discovered. Fortunately after inserting our guy into Baghdad, he has managed to locate the mole who is secretly being held by a possible Soviet implant and have tailed the pair to Iranian city of Bandar Abbas. He has a hideout there"

"That doesn't make any sense. Why would this Soviet operative take the mole to one of Iraq's enemies?" the President asked in confusion. "Well sir, we do have our forces pretty close to the Iraqi border," Secretary of Defense Donald Powell pointed out. "He might be afraid that we might head all the way to Bagdad if the cease-fire breaks."

The UN and Iraqis managed to get a temporary cease-fire and there were talks to end the Gulf War. The Iraqis mostly accepted the cease-fire because their casualty rates were in the thousands compared to the coalition's two hundred.

"After tapping his wires, we have discovered he intends to be extracted from Iran along with the Israeli mole." Valley continued. The president laid back in his chair and put a hand on his chin. "What can we do about this?"

"Sir, we have the USS George Washington with several helicopters and special forces aboard out in the Persian Gulf. We also have the operative who tailed the two already inside Iran and is ready to link up with Special forces to launch a rescue/capture mission."

"This our chance sir. All we need is your authorization and the mission is a go." It was not an easy choice for the Commander in Chief.

Bandar Abbas, 2:45 a.m

The American on the inside made across the near empty, but no where near quiet street. He was wearing a Middle Eastern robe with a turban sealing his head from the wind and settling dust. The elderly appearing man was actually a twenty nine year old Dereck Lance who had managed to slip in with Middle Eastern society.

Lance had just gotten what might have been the best sleep he would ever have on his mission. Especially in such a dirty city and crappy motel and for it to be so early in the morning. While Lance was fairer skin and lighter haired than most residents, he had managed to get by with relatively little difficulty.

Derek Lance has busted his butt off tracking down Soviet Agents and Western defectors, rescuing Americans and communist defectors, and gaining enemy information on hostile nations during the early to mid eighties. But the Cold War was dying down and priorities shifted to the Middle East, gradually over time. Still it was nice to have a little trip back to memory lane, hunting down a Soviet.

The pier entrance was just up ahead. It was where he would make contact with the SEALS and would from there procede to apprehend the Soviet and rescue the Israeli mole. And all under the darkness of early morning.

Lance shouted out in Farsi "Hello." The guard who watched over the pier came out of his station and rushed towards Lance, gun in hand. As he held his weapon pointed at Lance, he took a closer look at him and then relaxed. The guard was Lance's motel neighbor.

Lance was lucky. If he didn't get a chance to know the guard and gain his trust, it would have been a bit more difficult to pull of this operation. And more blood would unnecessarily be spilled. The guard walked back off to his station. "Next time, don't disturb my sleep." the guard said with a mumble.

Derek walked passed the station and continued to the edge of the pier. There he would wait for the big guns to come in. After the mission was completed, Lance could finally get out of this place. And he just couldnt wait to take a shower.

Presidential Situation Room, Camp David

The president thought to himself about the consequences of the mission, whether it succeeded or failed. If it succeeded, great, but the US still kidnapped a Soviet citizen who Moscow would demand be returned once they notice he's missing.

If the mission failed, the US committed a deadly operation in Iran which involved a Russian citizen and an Israeli mole. Then every source inside Iraq that the West was in contact with was put in danger. Then there would be the Iranian outrage in the international community.

There was also a chance the ceasefire could break in case of failure. Not to mention the effects on the upcoming peace talks in Rome for a peace treaty involving Jerusalem and a reduction treaty with the Soviet Union.

But there were also American lives. The president thought to himself about all those bus bombings in Israel. He didn't want to see similar attacks down the street in Washington.

Soviet outrage be damned. We have potential Iraqi sponsored terrorism on our hands. It would be in our best interest to stop these things before they happen.

The Soviets were just going to have to suck it up. He had a duty to protect the American people and decided to do just that.

"Valley, how are our chances of success looking?"

"There looking pretty darn good right now sir. It 2:00 in Iran right now so not many people should be out to witness the operation. And our guy inside has reported the targets have not changed locations."

"Okay. You have my approval to launch this operation." POTUS said with confidence in his voice.

The DDCI, SecDef, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs immediately got on the phones giving the mission a go to their people. While they were doing that, the POTUS signed a presidential finding which the president was required by law to sign after authorizing a covert operation and that the chairmen of the House and Senate Intelligence committees.

"Your boys better not fail us with civilian lives on the line."

"They won't Mr. President. They're pros." Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Richard Harrell said.

And that is the end of chapter one. I'm going to be honest, it is going to take me sometime to get these chapters up. Luckily I will have a lot of time to work on this story when summer comes. Don't lose hope! I will explain more about the plot soon.
