In 2010 Drug Cartels launch a coup and take over Mexico.

The exact kind of scenario you've described, while not quite ASB, is ridiculously improbable.

However, the general idea of having Mexico become an even more broken, corrupt, and more explicitly criminal-controlled country isn't out of the question. You could almost certainly see some kind of strongman emerge, with the backing of cartels, who turns the place into an actual narco-state. Which specific PODs you'd need, i'm not sure, but i'd say they'd have to be further back than 2010.

This is an overt takeover of Mexico's government by the Cartels, not the US fighting leftist rebels or overthrowing socialists. Mexico's rightful government will likley request UN forces.

The problem is that the particular president that got overthrown was very controversial, he started his term on accusations that he won through electoral fraud against his leftist rival, a huge chunk of the population believed that and his war on cartels was extremely unpopular because of how bloody it became.

So if the cartel funded officers do the coup proclaiming it is to bring peace and reverse an electoral fraud, placing the leftist rival, which is Mexico's current president, as president, then it becomes a US intervention to fight leftist rebels and overthrow socialists, or at least it would look that way.

One of the first things that gets done is that President Obama orders the US/Mexico border closed and put the National Guard in place to enforce the closure.

I don't really believe Andrés Manuel would simply accept the power through a narco-coup. It would be like accepting to turn into a puppet for the drug cartels, I insist, this needs earlier POD's.

Without them this is simply impossible.

Im with you here. Modern Mexico simply isnt that unstable nor its political environment that grossly corrupt. This is a ridiculous proposition. If people here think that Mexico, a modern democratic state governed by rule of law can be overthrown by the disparate, albeit violent, drug cartels who magically unify despite massive rifts, ongoing grudges and no incentive to work together... Well you quite frankly have no idea what you are talking about. Its like asking what if the Klan, the Crips and the NRA joined up and overthrew the US government in 2016. Its not a possibility. Then to say "dont worry Murica can save em and restore democracy" like the Mexican political system is utterly helpless, is so quaint. You need the country to be barely functioning and a lot more PODs stretching further back.
