Improve your Country's Military

Have the RAAF get f-15's instead of F/a-18 . when the F-111 are due to be replaced get F-15E . The F-15 purchase woulad have given us a longer ranged easier upgrade fighter earlier .

Get the AH-1Z instead of the tiger

Buy Japanese subs instead of the Collins class.

Buy DDG-51 lite instead of the Spanish one .

so many mistakes in the Aussie procurement system .

For the army realize that anything not compatable with USA is not going to be sustainable in the future and get a full armoured division worth of vehicles in the 90's . I'm talking SPG / M1-A1 / Bradleys .

Yeah okay, but this thread isn't about saving money,it's about getting a better military.

A better military doesn't equate a military with better and more shiny toys. A better military means a military that offers the maximum amount of protection for the minimum amount of cost. Case in point the Soviet Army. Didnt lack anything in resources, but caused the system it was supposed to protect to go bankrupt, hence completely and totally failing in its mission.

Bigger is not always better. Bett in this situation equates a military that is the best adapted to the tasks facing it.

Plus for some people, beatniks and hippies mostly :p;), a 'better' military is a smaller or nonexistent military.

UK -

Invest heavily in VTOL planes, work off the back of the Harrier's success.

Stop chopping/changing plans for navy half way through.

Keep a couple of Carriers operational.

Join the EU and work on a joint task force with other countries.

Decomission everything except the submarine fleet, and fisheries protection vessels.

Also disband the RAF and fold the maritime patrol, air sea rescue, and a few interceptor squadrons into the FAA.

The Royal Marines can probably be kept on as a ceremonial force + SOF unit.

The army can be expanded but all units are made reserve TA with only a small full time professional cadre for training purposes.

The skunk a little strong today?

Shit where to you start with America.

Pick up the TRS2 in the 60s to give us a believable medium bomber, not just fighter bombers acting as medium bomber.

The big one through dont let fucking Robert McNamara becoming SecDef.

Those are the big two I can think of off the top of my head.

Also I been thinking about this some more. We keep guns in fighters instead of trying the missiles only shit of the early to mid 60s.

Also going with the A-6F over the bomb of the A-12 will be a huge help.

You mean't squadron?

:D Yes. The squadron. Though since it is all we have, it technically is our air wing. ;)

Also, definitly Degman, better to have our own industry working than buying German tanks ( except if dirt cheap )...

Yes, but the trick is to replace the whole tank fleet with the Degman, and not just build 40 of them and upgrade the rest of the 75 T-84`s in service. I read in a newspaper article about two years ago that in 2001., the original plan was to have around 200 Degmans...

Also, get from Swedes 2 Gotheborg corvettes as offset for Gripen.

Never heard of this offer before. When was it made?

UK:

-Disband the Army or cut it down to a single division or so. Sell off the tanks to whoever wants them.

-Disband the RAF, fold it into the FAA. Sell most of our fighter bombers and instead focus on VTOL with a few interceptors for point defence.

-Never again should the UK have to use land based aircraft for a conflict on another continent (Libya).

-Have the carriers be completed according to original specifications. If possible buy Swedish aircraft for them or develop something off the back of the Harrier. Have 3-4 carriers instead of 2.

-Ammo shortages such as those seen in Libya and Iraq should not be a problem.

-Limit the ability of the Treasury to interfere with the military budget.

-Dont cancel the Nimrods.

-Pump everything into having a peace-keeping, expeditionary army based around the navy that can enforce a sphere of British influence around the world, much like France has with West Africa.

-Order BAE to start buying up European firms, selling off American assets and to focus more on cooperation with Europe.

-Buy European wherever possible. Exchange America as a ally for France.

-Pump money into the Marines.

-Invest in replacing Trident with UCAVs carrying standoff nuclear weapons (this might take sometime), if possible have them be able to launch from both carriers and from land.

^My random and brief thoughts on the subject. I'm a great fan of the idea of a Anglo-French union.

Does the US military really need improvement? We're by far the best in the world. No one dares attack us conventionally.

I guess we could improve cost cutting since we also spend more than anyone in the world as well. Some of that money can obviously be cut and saved and still not have a noticeable impact on our fighting capability.

According to this guy, your entire fleet of tanks, APCs and IFVs needs to improve dramatically.

For Ireland it would depend on how post WW2 things go, assume a non aligned version as that's the most likely option post WW2, but 1 that gives a bit more attention to it's military.

For the Navy buy the full 6 Flowers at the end of WW2 instead of the 3, perhaps go for a replacement of some sort in the 60's rather than run them into the ground, either go for the domestic design (Aoife's not Deirdre) or perhaps the Type 14/Joao Coutinho as a cheap ship. In modern times go for the P50's/P60's and the EPV (An Absalon like planned.

For the Army, pick up sensible surplus equipment and get the number of spares needed to sustain them, so more 25 pounders, perhaps light tanks (the Comets were reported to be a pain to get up to the training area). Moving forward support Timoney with procurement all the way to today with the CM-32 instead of the Mowags( ie the domestic models and then the Bushmaster)

For the Air Corps again pick up the surplus cheap, and go forward with that type of second rate equipment (I'd drop the idea of fighters early than OTL and concentrate on helicopters and perhaps a cheap MPA to support the Army and the Navy.

Ok

Fine.

For what? For corvette? Wikipedia is your friend....

Given my home country doesn't 'have a millitary' then preaty much anything suggested would improve its 'capacity'.

But even then I wouldn't because to be frank, I like my home island being a bit of a pacifist. If inderviduals want to go and volenteer for a millitary carieer (and many do), then they can, and will be, some of the finest soliders in the world.

If the question is expanded to 'civil defense' in general, then perhaps having retained quite a bit more of the Cold War plans and procudures would not go a miss, since those were designed specifically to allow continuation and function of island activities even if the rest of the world was blowing itself to pieces, as well as allow for the 'quick mobilisation' of experts, the police services, as well and breif the coastguard and shipping for the closing of island waters to refugees and other unwanted parties.

Perhaps having preserved the Atlantic Wall defenses (at least in terms of property maintainace, if not in armament) might have also been good for tourism and general interest.

Above all though, no millitary is a good millitary, in my opinion.

United States:

Air Force:

I am a fan of the F-5/F-20 planes. Instead of going whole hog for the F-22, I'd go with F-15SE's instead. I'd keep the current F-15's and F-16's. I'd dump the B2 bomber, too expensive to run. I'd keep the current B-52's and B-1's, maybe add more B-1's, perhaps to the B-1A standard and fill out the rest with refurbished B-52's.

Navy:

Keep the carriers and ships, not too knowledgable on this part, but I'd go for at least a 400 ship Navy. Killing the F-14 was a bad thing but I'd keep the Superhornets.

Army:

Give them a more free hand in aviation, perhaps using strike aircraft like the Embraer Toucan or even the A-10 when the Air Force sheds them. M1 tanks are OK, but they are money and maintenance hogs so I'd probably add in a smaller tank or tank-like vehicle like the M8 Buford along with the Stryker although I like the Twilight: 2000 idea of a LAV-75. I'd keep the M-16 family of weapons and bring back the M-1911A1.

Marines:

I plead some ignorance here but I's apply my Army strategy to them but have it tailored to their mission needs. I had an idea of merging them with the Army but backed off, I value my life. :D

Coast Guard:

Steady as she goes.
