Impeach FDR!

FDR was not as popular in Congress as he might've been with the public, or as he may seem now. He was trying to aid Britain. He authorized a "shoot on sight" order that's arguably ultra vires...

So, suppose a hostile Congress (or group of hostile Congresscritters, which amounts to the same thing:rolleyes:) decides he's gone too far & impeaches him. Could he have been convicted? Would he have been forced out? (AIUI, this follows a conviction.)

That makes Henry Wallace PotUS. Does Wallace manage to keep the U.S. out of the war? Does he manage to keep Japan from attacking Pearl Harbor, by firing a few key senior people at State (the ones who cranked up the oil embargo farther than FDR intended OTL)?

Is this even remotely credible?

If you wanted a Wallace landslide in 1944, this is the best way to go. And if you wanted a Democratic supermajority in both Houses, this is the way to go.

I expect the Republicans to be so badly damaged by this that not even Ike will bring them out.

You really think there'd be that big a backlash against the GOP for this? I had the impression FDR at the time OTL was pretty unpopular, even among some Democrats.

Not with the people who votes, not with the masses. 1940 and 1944 were landslides for FDR, just less of landslides due to the Depression being over.

Now, if Republicans kick FDR out, Wallace can easily play up the "They kicked FDR out!" card and run with that to a landslide. Imagine something on the scale of 1936.

Well, he did win overwhelming electoral victories four elections in a row. So, he seems like a pretty popular guy to me.

I can't see it happening. FDR is by far the most popular person in the USA during that time period. We are about to go to war and they impeach FDR? Crazy talk. Maybe the Super right wing nuts had that fantasy , not the pros they know better. Heck they nominated Wilkie in 40 to be the GOP Standard bearer. He was a clone of FDR. Plus they need a majority of the HR to send it over to the Senate. I doubt they have the votes even with the southern democrats. The Southern democrats could read polls better than any one. They would be more scared of Wallace than FDR. No way they would go GOP impeachment route to allow that to happen.
